About This Pub

Ah, Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem – what a belter of a pub! Tucked away at the base of Castle Rock, it's got this incredible history dating back to 1189, making it one of England's oldest inns, and you can really feel that old-world magic as soon as you walk in. The cave-like interiors and nooks are just brilliant for soaking up the atmosphere, and the beer selection is spot on, with plenty of traditional ales that'll have you coming back for more. The food's pretty decent too, with fresh pub grub and options for all sorts of diets, served up by staff who are genuinely welcoming and on the ball. It's great for families or if you're out with the dog, and that beer garden is a lovely spot when the weather's on your side. But, let's be honest, it does get packed, especially with tourists, so you might end up jostling for space or waiting a bit for a table. And if you're on the taller side, mind your noggin in those low beams! Overall, it's a fantastic place for a relaxed catch-up or a bit of history with your pint, and I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're in Nottingham – just go with the flow and you'll have a grand time.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • They've got a fantastic selection of beers, including cask ales, which are perfect for anyone wanting to try something traditional and delicious.
  • The staff are really friendly and efficient, always ready with a smile and quick service to make you feel right at home.
  • It's dog-friendly and family-friendly, with a beer garden for those sunny days, plus options for vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free dishes.
  • The pub's location near Nottingham Castle means it's ideal for a day out, blending history with a cosy spot to relax and enjoy good food.
Cons
  • It can get pretty busy, especially during peak times, so you might have to queue or struggle to find a seat if you're not there early.
  • The old design means it's not the most spacious, and taller folks might need to watch their heads in some of the lower-ceilinged areas.
  • As a historic spot, it might feel a bit touristy at times, which could take away from the local charm if you're after a quiet, neighbourhood vibe.

A visit to Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem is like stepping back in time. Known as one of the oldest pubs in England, this legendary inn claims to have been established in 1189 AD. Whether the exact founding date is debated or not, the sense of history is undeniable. Built into the sandstone cliffs below Nottingham Castle, parts of the pub are carved directly into the rock, creating a unique and atmospheric interior that feels like a medieval hideaway. The caves were once used as a brewhouse for the castle above and are now part of the pub itself – truly a remarkable setting. I especially appreciated how the pub preserves its historical identity, with plaques, antique decor. This isn’t just a pub – it’s a cultural and historical experience. A must-visit for anyone in Nottingham. Highly recommended!

This is a unique pub, located inside a huge stone cave. The ambiance is out of this world, you definitely travel back in time. This pub has a lot of history and is very old. The beer selection is great and delicious. Over the whole pub you can find beautiful details from the past.

A very unique pub given the history behind it and it’s well maintained. Can accommodate a lot of people but given the old design, tall people will have to mind their heads. Staff is friendly and efficient and they do have a fair selection of beers. Didn’t try the food but did see a few great dishes being carried to other tables. A few parking spaces could be found along the street close by.

For the outside it really looks old , built in 1189 is considered the oldest pub in England and for the inside it looks more like a museum, didn't take so many pictures because there were a lot of people divided by the rooms eating and chilling having their beer so, we must respect those moments. The Guinness was top quality and the atmosphere of the pub was very good ! Worth a visit if you're in Nottingham searching for a pub .

A member of our group has heard this was the oldest inn/pub so we stopped by for a quick pint. The place was BUSY even in the middle of the day. Plenty of seating outside on picnic benches if you can handle the cold (nothing a bunch of Canadians can't stomach 🇨🇦). Had my first cask ale ever here. I was pleasantly surprised, it was pretty good and it went down easier without as much carbonation! If you're into places that have a ton of history, definitely come check this place out!
