About This Pub
Ah, Fothergills – what a gem of a place tucked away in Nottingham, isn't it? I have to say, it's one of those venues that really captures the heart with its historic charm and bistro-style fixed-price menus packed full of fresh, local goodies. From what I've gathered from folks' chats online, the food is a real highlight; imagine tucking into a mouthwatering Sunday roast or a steak and ale pie that's been raved about time and again – it's no wonder they've got such a solid 4.4 rating. The staff seem like absolute stars too, always on hand with a smile and that extra effort that makes you feel right at home, whether you're there for a quick breakfast or a full evening out. And let's not forget, it's super dog-friendly in the bar and terrace areas, which is brilliant if you're out for a walk with your pooch. They've got a nice lineup of events, like wine tastings, and a good range of drinks to pair with your meal. On the flip side, though, it's not all perfect – I've heard a few grumbles about food not being hot enough, which is a bit of a letdown when everything else looks so inviting. Plus, being cashless might throw a spanner in the works for some, and on busier days, it could feel a touch overwhelming. Overall, it's a place I'd recommend giving a go; it's got that mix of tradition and quality that makes for a memorable visit, as long as you keep expectations realistic for a lively pub scene.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely spot on – from hearty Sunday roasts to delicious steak pies, it's clear they've got a knack for using fresh, local ingredients to create proper tasty meals.
-
The atmosphere is lovely and relaxed, with a historic building that gives you great views of Nottingham Castle, making it a perfect spot for a catch-up with mates.
-
Service is top-notch; the staff are friendly and go the extra mile, which really makes you feel welcome, especially if you're popping in with your furry four-legged friend since it's dog-friendly.
-
They've got a great selection of drinks, including ales from local micro-breweries and wines, plus fun events like wine experiences that add a bit of excitement to your visit.
-
It's open bright and early for breakfast and stays late, so you can enjoy a full day out without rushing.
Cons
-
Some dishes might not be piping hot when they arrive, like that veggie breakfast that left one person disappointed – it's a shame when the presentation is spot on but the temperature lets it down.
-
Being a cashless business could be a bit of a hassle if you're someone who prefers to pay with notes and coins, though it's handy for cards and contactless.
-
It can get busy, especially on match days or weekends, which might mean things feel a tad rushed or not everything lives up to the hype every time.

Me and my Husband came here for breakfast, we went with the Veggie breakfast and even though it was presented so lovely it just wasn't hot at all.
The butter was completely melted so we had to just pour it out of the wrapper.
The beans were cold so were instantly put a side, everything else lukewarm.
There was only us and 2 tables full so it was very disappointing as it seemed like either the food had been standing in the kitchen a long time or food had been made up for earlier for previous customers and was let just to cool down.
The staff that served us and said bye to us were really nice.
We weren't asked about allergies and also we weren't asked how we wanted our eggs - which wasn't a problem we were just surprised there weren't not options available. My egg was lovely whereas my husbands was dry and not runny at all. The menu also says 2 eggs but we were only given 1 each.
The atmosphere was nice with the twinkling lights inside.
The toilets were clean.
Perhaps if we had breakfast earlier then it would have been a better experience.
We met family at Fothergills on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. They take reservations on a Saturday where other pubs in the area do not.
Our son had the steak & ale pie with mash, which he said was delicious. My husband & I shared the fisherman's platter & the mussels. The sauce on the mussels was delicious. However, the octopus on the platter was chewy. Small serve for the cost. My mum had the fish & chips, and an absolutely huge serving of fish. However, the batter was quite thick.
They serve a vegetarian pie too, which sounded delicious. Drinks menu was extensive.
The waiter was great, friendly & efficient. Pub was very busy.
Dog friendly & complimentary dog treats outside for all the pups.
Fantastic pub. Awesome food!!! Really enjoyed ourselves. The waiter was excellent and went the extra mile. Highly recommend this place.
We stopped in for Sunday Roast. Did not disappoint one bit. It was hands down one of the best Sunday Roasts we've had in a long time. Definitely one of the better meals on this 2 week trip to the UK. We both had the slow roasted lamb shank.
Amazing experience. Had Salmon Gravalax and the Steak & Stout pie. Absolutely superb. Some of the best food I've had and incredibly fast service considering it was a busy Saturday match day evening. Friendly attentive wait staff and good atmosphere. Highly recommend. Great guineas too. Thank you to our server, Ben.
