About This Pub

Ah, Ye Olde King's Head, what a lovely spot it is in the heart of Chester! I've got to say, chatting about it feels like sharing tales over a pint with mates. The place has this wonderful historic feel, dating back to the 1600s, with all those charming wooden beams and antique touches that really make you feel immersed in the past – it's perfect if you're into that sort of thing. From what I've seen in the reviews, the food steals the show; those Sunday roasts and fish and chips sound mouthwatering, and folks rave about how homemade and tasty everything is, without breaking the bank. The staff, bless them, come across as genuinely warm and attentive, whether you're just stopping by for a drink or hosting a big event like a themed birthday bash – they even got into character for one reviewer's medieval party, which is just brilliant. It's dog-friendly too, so it's great for family outings or a casual meet-up. On the flip side, the opening hours can be a bit confusing with different times listed, and since it's not claimed online, you might not get quick responses to any questions. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for a memorable night out – I'd say give it a go if you're in Chester, as the positives far outweigh the niggles, and you'll likely leave with a smile and a full belly.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The historic charm of the place is absolutely spot on – it's like stepping back in time with those exposed wooden beams and antique furnishings, making it a real treat for anyone who loves a bit of old-school atmosphere.
  • The food is top-notch; think hearty Sunday roasts, exceptional fish and chips, and homemade meals that leave you wanting more, all at a fair price.
  • The staff are an absolute delight – friendly, welcoming, and always ready to go the extra mile, whether it's for a special event or just a casual visit.
  • It's a welcoming spot for everyone, including families and dogs, with a warm, cosy vibe and even a fireplace that makes it feel like a home away from home.
  • They handle events brilliantly, like themed parties in the function room, and the haunted history adds a fun, quirky element for those who fancy a bit of excitement.
Cons
  • The operating hours seem a tad inconsistent, with varying closing times listed for Sundays, which might leave you scratching your head about when to pop in.
  • As it's an unclaimed business on Google, it might not always have the latest updates or responses to queries, so you could miss out on the most current info.
  • Being in a historic building, some areas might feel a bit dated or less modern, which isn't ideal if you're after something sleek and contemporary.

Went for food for Father's day. One of the best Sunday roasts I've had in a long time! Staff were pleasant and the service was fantastic. Honestly, highly recommend, and will certainly be returning!

Sophie and Erica were awesome staff, so helpful and friendly. The fish and chips was exceptional, plenty to share between the 2 of us with a garlic bread. The atmosphere was a typical English pub - great service and very warm and welcoming.

Loved visiting here at Halloween. Didn't eat, so I can't review on food. Ask the bar for their folder of haunted happenings at the hotel! We were super freaked out to use the toilet & took a photo which appeared to have a face in the door.
