About This Pub
You know, I really enjoyed my time at The Cross Keys in Chester – it's one of those pubs that just feels special, tucked away just inside the Roman city walls with a prime spot near the river. The beers from Joule's Brewery are spot on, always fresh and full of character, and they've got a rotating selection of seasonal ales that keep things interesting. Pair that with the tasty grub like those pork pies or their Sunday lunches, and you've got a winner for a casual get-together or even a family do in their private function room, which is like having your own little pub within a pub. The interior's got that warm, inviting charm with its stained glass and comfy seating, and the outdoor terrace is brilliant for soaking up the sun with a drink in hand. On the flip side, it's quite compact, so if you're heading there on a busy evening, it might feel a tad squished, and the fact it's mostly open in the evenings and not every day means it's not always convenient for a quick stop. All in all, it's a cracking spot if you're after an authentic pub experience in Chester, but just keep those quirks in mind to make the most of it.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The beers are absolutely fantastic, especially the Joule's brews like Pale Ale and Slumbering Monk – they're brewed with pure Shropshire mineral water and always hit the spot.
-
It's got this charming Victorian interior with twinkling stained glass windows, leather seats, and oak floors that make you feel right at home in a proper historic pub.
-
The food's a real treat – tasty pork pies and impeccable Sunday lunches that you absolutely must try, though it's worth booking ahead to avoid missing out.
-
The staff are brilliant and super friendly, creating a welcoming vibe that makes every visit feel like catching up with mates.
-
There's a lovely slim raised terrace out front, perfect for enjoying a pint in the fresh air when the weather's on your side.
Cons
-
It's a bit on the small side as a single-roomed pub, so it can get quite crowded during peak times and might not suit larger groups.
-
The opening hours are limited, typically just evenings and only five days a week, which could be a hassle if you're after a daytime drink or fancy popping in on a quiet Sunday morning.
-
While it's got a great function room for events, you might need to plan well in advance, and street parking can be a bit of a faff in that part of Chester.

Fantastic beers, tasty pork pies and a great friendly pub with good decor. Also, an amazingly good function room available upstairs too.
We often have a beer here like the independent beers.never eaten here before but when we come to chester this is definitely our go to Sunday lunch .impeccable food and serving can't wait to come again.you must do lunch here and you really need to book otherwise you won't get in
One of the best pubs in Chester! Great staff, brilliant beer ... What more could you possibly need. Can't wait be visit again.
Nice pub from Joule's regional brewery, in an old building wood panelled and vitraux windows. Good beer and cozy vibe.
I love the Joule's pub chain. Very small but perfectly formed. Great beer. Flat first came here about 43 years ago when it was a medicore Whitbresd (?) pub. Since Joules took over it has been a great pub. Small sun trap patio to front. Lovely interior. Great real ale. Pies sold for scoobies..bit microwaved but tasty. Ic n Flic loved their beer.
