About This Pub

Ah, Ye Hole In Ye Wall – what a delightful spot it is, tucked away in the heart of Liverpool. I have to say, stepping into this place feels like slipping back in time to 1726, with its rich history and characterful nooks that just make you want to settle in for the evening. The staff are the real highlight; they're so approachable and passionate about what they do, treating everyone like an old friend, which really makes the visit memorable. You'll find a cracking array of drinks on offer, especially those local cask ales that rotate regularly – it's a treat for any ale enthusiast. And if you're lucky, you might catch some live music or a match on the telly, adding that extra buzz to the atmosphere. On the flip side, it's a tad disappointing that they only do basic snacks rather than proper food, so if you're peckish for more than a bag of crisps, you'll have to order in from Castros or head elsewhere. Still, it's a balanced little haven that does pubbing right – ideal for a catch-up with mates, but maybe not your first choice for a big meal. All in all, it's worth popping by for that authentic Liverpool experience, as long as you keep your expectations in check for the grub.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's steeped in history as Liverpool's oldest pub, dating back to 1726, which gives it such a unique and charming vibe.
  • The staff are absolute gems, always warm and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • They've got a brilliant selection of drinks, like a rotating choice of up to six hand-pulled cask ales from local breweries, plus beers, wines, and spirits to suit all tastes.
  • Live music and events, including gigs on selected evenings and weekends, plus live sport on the telly, really add to the lively atmosphere.
  • You can order food from their friends at Castros to enjoy in the pub, which is a handy way to sort out a bite without leaving.
Cons
  • They don't serve proper meals, just nibbles like crisps and nuts, so if you're after a full dinner, you'll need to plan ahead or pop next door.
  • Opening hours can vary, especially around holidays like Christmas and New Year, which might catch you out if you're not checking first.

Amazing atmosphere and service. Music is great, people are the best. I would love for it serve some food to have with my Guinness. Other than that, a must in Liverpool.

Liverpool's oldest pub dating back almost 300 years! We visited as part of Bus Brewery Tours Liverpool, and was introduced to the landlord, who is a very lovely affable chap, and had a joke and a laugh with our party. The pub is full of character, with the beer cellar being above the main pub, and full of small anecdotes such as women not being allowed in before the 70s. Definitely a must visit stop if you're a fan of history, pubs, or just in Liverpool as a tourist!

This is the oldest pub in the city. The date on the wall says it's been in business since 1726. So in two years time it will actually be 300 years old. I've heard that this pub is unusual in another way in that the beer cellar is on the first floor. The reason apparently is that it used to be a Quaker cemetery and the pub was built over it. It's a very warm and welcoming place and judging from the atmosphere the locals love this place.
