About This Pub

Ah, Whitehall Tavern – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in Bristol, you know? From what I've gathered from folks' chats online, it's got this welcoming atmosphere where you can pop in for a pint and feel right at home, especially with prices that won't break the bank – think a Foster's for less than a fiver! The staff are always up for a chat, and they've nailed the basics like keeping everything clean and serving up some cracking beers like Butcombe, which sounds like a winner for ale lovers. It's ideal for catching up with friends or enjoying a quiet evening, but do keep an eye on their opening hours, as there have been a few grumbles about doors locking early on event nights, which could put a dampener on things. Overall, it's a solid choice if you're in the area, offering that classic pub experience with more hits than misses, and I'd say it's worth a visit for a relaxed night out.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The drinks are incredibly affordable – you can get a pint for under £3, which is a real treat these days!
  • The staff are super friendly and welcoming, making it a great spot for a casual meet-up or a date night.
  • They keep the place spotless, especially the toilets, which is something you don't always find in pubs.
  • The beer selection is top-notch, with Real Ale like Butcombe getting high praise for being just right.
  • It's a cosy local pub with a warm atmosphere that's perfect for relaxing and chatting with mates.
Cons
  • There might be issues with opening times, like on busy nights when they could lock up early without much notice, which could spoil your plans.
  • The location in Redfield might not be convenient for everyone, as it's a bit out of the way and could mean a longer journey for some folks.

Original review at the very end of this. Unreal! Arrived there 10:30pm New Years eve after checking the night before that they were open and we could come. They had locked the doors, not because they were busy, because they made that decision. They didn't tell us the night before and ruined our chance to celebrate. Despite reasoning, logically and politely. Obviously not great for me, a local that wanted to celebrate there. So, nice pub, good atmosphere, but management very inconsiderate. Totally ruined an important night where plans were specifically made. So, never going back again! Customers lost forever. It was the easiest thing to do to accept logical genuine reason, but stubborn is stubborn and should be pointed out. If I won't edit original review (below), because it was genuine, but it is ironic that the response was "Come and see us again soon x" "Dominus mentes et oculos in templo deae amittat". One of just a few real pubs left in the city, A place where you can quickly talk to strangers, I say quickly because within minutes, they are no longer strangers. Many places used to be like that, sadly less and less these days. A real warm atmosphere. Thank you. Nuff said.

A lovely little pub at the back of redfield. Friendly staff, and very welcoming. It was a date night, and as far as the pub was concerned, was very good. If this were closer to my doorstep, I'd certainly be happy to attend regularly, sadly for me, it's the other side of town and 2 buses. Prices were extremely good. I drank double jack Daniels n coke as a medium long drink, and was very happy with what I paid.... Surprised is more correct tbh. Only 2 negs ... No hot food of any sort. That means no pies, or chips etc, IE classic pub grub. Didn't do coffee or tea. I'm not always in a mood for booze, so would have been cold fizzy, water, or cordial to drink. These minus points were not enough to lose a star tho. It can be expensive to serve hot food (a cook, plus even a restricted menu, would still need an oven, chipper, grill, microwave, insurance etc. so I get a small place not doing it. Tea and coffee tho, would only need a kettle for tea, a small machine for coffees. However, enjoyed my time there, and as I said above, had it been a lot closer to me, I could see me becoming a regular Well done

Drinking Blackthorn today, but the Real Ale (Butcombe) is 10/10 and as it should be (Flat). I can’t see how anyone can post bad reviews about this place unless they work at/for the nearby competitors!
