About This Pub
Ah, The Dark Horse – it's one of those pubs that just draws you in with its charm. From the rustic feel to the buzzing rooftop terrace where you can soak up the sun and enjoy some cracking tunes, it's got that perfect blend of relaxed and lively. The staff are absolute stars, always on hand with a smile and expert advice on the brilliant craft ales and gins – I'm a big fan of their local options. And don't forget the pub quiz every other Tuesday; it's a proper laugh and a highlight for a mid-week get-together. They've even got event spaces that are spot on for parties or casual meet-ups, and being dog-friendly makes it even more appealing for a casual outing. On the downside, it's a bit of a shame the kitchen's out of action, so you'll have to sort your own grub, though bringing in a takeaway isn't a bad workaround. Plus, while the drinks are solid, a few more rotations in the beer line-up would add that extra variety. All in all, it's a solid choice for a pint with mates, and I'd say it's worth a visit for anyone looking for a friendly spot in Bristol.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, always making you feel right at home with their warm welcomes and quick service.
-
They've got a fantastic selection of craft ales, gins, and local ciders that really hit the spot – perfect for anyone who loves a good pint or a tipple with character.
-
The rooftop terrace is an absolute treat, especially on sunny days, where you can catch the last rays with a drink and maybe even some tunes from a DJ.
-
It's got that cosy, rustic vibe inside with big leather sofas and a roaring log fire for the colder months, making it ideal for a relaxed evening.
-
The pub quiz every other Tuesday is a blast, with a fun atmosphere that keeps things lively without being overwhelming.
-
They're super dog-friendly and right next to a park, plus there's a free book exchange and baskets of board games to keep everyone entertained.
-
The event spaces are brilliant for private hires, like birthdays or gatherings, with options for everything from a secret dancefloor to smaller meetings.
Cons
-
The kitchen's closed for refurbishment at the moment, so you can't get any food on site – though you're welcome to bring in a takeaway, as long as you tidy up after.
-
Some people have mentioned they'd love to see more variety in the beer selection, as it doesn't rotate as often as it could.

I'd been to the dark horse before for drinks and always had a lovely time.
A couple of weeks ago I asked to reserve an event space for my birthday and the process was smooth and straightforward. The staff were very helpful and I had a great night!
My favourite pub in Bristol.
Amazing staff.
Great beer.
Chilled yet party vibes ♥️
I luuurrrve The Dark Horse. My fave pub on Church Rd and my parents stayed here when they came to visit Bristol which was great and handy. Everyone who works here is so friendly and the sofa's are well comfy.
I just sooo wish they rotated their beers! Kaleidoscope, Mosaic and Shangri-La are great, but itd be cool to get some guests in? Then it would be the perfect pub. 💕💕
Still, five stars, tens across the board. Thank you TDK.
Come here regularly, brilliant interior and atmosphere. The bartenders are always warm and quick. Love the roof top beer garden. Altogether a great pub!
Had a fantastic birthday party here in the function / party room in the back! The staff were super accommodating and gave us loads of time to set up and decorate. It was a perfect sized space for everyone to hang out, chat and have a dance. We were also able to set up our own PA system and have some live music on the small stage. Perfect venue, great party! Thanks Dark Horse!
