About This Pub
You know, when you fancy a laid-back spot in Rayleigh for a bite and a chat, the Travellers Joy really delivers on the basics – it's got that warm, homely feel where the staff make you feel welcome from the get-go, and the food comes out piping hot with generous portions that leave you satisfied. I love how they've got deals to keep things affordable, and it's brilliant for families or if you're keen on catching the big games on the telly. The atmosphere is just right for a relaxed evening, whether you're tucking into a hearty breakfast or enjoying a meal with mates. But, on the downside, it's a shame about the pricing on some drinks – they can feel a tad steep next to other places nearby, and a few reviews mentioned niggles like having to grab your own cutlery or spotting some unclean areas, which might spoil the fun if you're after a seamless experience. All in all, it's a solid choice for us pub lovers in Essex, as long as you go in with realistic expectations and maybe plan around those little hiccups.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are absolutely lovely and make you feel right at home, with friendly faces like Trish and Wendy going the extra mile.
-
The food is spot on – hot, tasty, and served up quickly, with great portions and a varied menu that hits the spot for breakfast or a full meal.
-
Prices are generally reasonable, especially with deals like 'Tuck in for a tenner' making it easy on the wallet for weekdays.
-
It's got a really welcoming atmosphere, perfect for family outings, catching up with friends, or watching live sports on Sky or TNT.
Cons
-
Some drinks and items feel a bit overpriced compared to other local pubs, which might leave you thinking twice about the bill.
-
There are occasional gripes with cleanliness, like stained glasses or dirty toilets, which can put a damper on the experience.
-
You might end up fetching your own cutlery at times, which isn't the most relaxing way to enjoy a meal out.

Lovely lunch with friends in our local pub. There’s always a nice atmosphere here at The Travellers Joy, the food is good: hot, delivered quickly to the table and reasonably priced. Trish is a familiar friendly face and is always welcoming.
The menu was varied and the food tasty but found it over priced compared to other local chains that offer better service: £6 glass of wine served in a glass full of stains, get your own cutlery and dirty toilets. Was not overly impressed but the alaska trifle was worth it.
It is just pricey compared to what you get, I visited 4 times and could never get a clean stainless wine glass, the windows are dirty, the tables are dirty, the menus on the table are sticky, no one comes to ask if you are happy with your meal...pick your own cutlery, coffee served in the wrong cup, expresso in a massive foot glassed irish coffee glass...
Just pretty crap considering how quaint Rayleigh is. We deserve better as locals: clean glasses without spots, service with a smile and food that looks at least what you advertise on the app.... it is more expensive that the Roebuck but WAY LESS NICE! Do pick your socks up people!
Excellent menu, great quality food. Had breakfast there, great portions. Server terrific. Reasonable prices, really cannot fault.
We went to The Travelers Joy on Sunday with my husband and In Laws we booked a table which was very easy. We ordered ours meals and drinks and within minutes Trish delivered the drinks to the table closely followed by our meals. She was very polite and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We often go in The Travelers Joys to eat and Wendy Trish and the rest of the team are all very pleasant and helpful some of the team even know our names. We like the food there and it’s always a good atmosphere. Another 10 out of 10 guys. Oh I meant to say my In laws travel from East Tilbury to eat in there which they have done on several occasions.
Enjoyed a nice evening out at the travellers joy, my food was really nice and the atmosphere was great. My server tonight, Wendy, made me feel so at ease. She seemed really lovely and has made me want to visit again
