About This Pub
Ah, The Spread Eagle – it's one of those pubs that really knows how to pull in a crowd for a good time, tucked away on the high street in Rayleigh. From what I've gathered from the reviews, the staff are the real stars here; they're chatty, professional, and go out of their way to make sure everyone's having a blast, whether it's handling the door or serving up drinks with a smile. The outdoor area sounds like a gem, especially on a sunny afternoon – imagine kicking back with mates in a freshly spruced-up garden, enjoying the vibes from the DJs on event nights. It's got that classic pub charm that makes for memorable evenings out. But, let's be honest, it's not all pints and cheers; the cash-only policy can be a right nuisance in this digital age, and that £10 entry fee might make you think twice before heading in. Plus, if you're hoping to hit the dance floor, you might find it a bit cramped, and there have been tales of the odd disruptive guest that security hasn't always managed perfectly. Still, with a solid 4.1 rating, it's clear this place has more going for it than not, so if you're up for a mix of fun and a few foibles, it's worth popping by for a pint or two.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are absolutely brilliant – from the door team to the bar staff, they're professional, friendly, and really make you feel welcome, which adds to the fun atmosphere.
-
It's got a great vibe for nights out, especially with the DJs spinning tunes and events like Martin Day nights that folks rave about.
-
The outdoor area has been nicely done up, perfect for soaking up the sun with a drink in hand – ideal for a relaxed afternoon.
-
Overall, it's a lively spot where you can have a right good laugh and enjoy the pub garden vibes.
Cons
-
It's cash only, which feels a bit outdated these days and can be a hassle if you're not prepared.
-
There's a £10 entry fee on some nights that might put a few people off, as it seems a tad steep for what you get.
-
Space can be tight, with not much room to dance, which might disappoint if you're after a proper boogie.
-
Occasionally, you might run into rowdy sorts, and while the security tries their best, it doesn't always sort things out smoothly.

So I was out on the 21/12 on a works do, I have to say the door staff was absolutely amazing, not only did they send someone out they looked after the punters that needed help and I truly was amazed at there professionalism dealing with people, what a great bunch of guys it has to be said, I will recommend this pub to anyone that wants to have a great experience, my upmost respect goes out to them all
Ive just started to go to spread eagle once a month on martin day night.ive never had such good night was brilliant the bar staff are amazing and so is the dj
I hadn't been here for a while and didn't realise it had all been done up out the back. It was such a lovely place to spend a sunny afternoon. The staff were friendly and chatty and I would definitely recommend a visit.
Always a giggle to be had. It's cash only so remember that when you arrive. Staff are brilliant, bouncers and bar staff alike. The DJs are great too, check what nights on so you know the vibe. The outside area at the back has been beautifully done and perfect for sunny drinks. Pub garden vibes
It’s not all bad, firstly the £10 charge is absolutely disgusting! To then be told it’s cash only in this day n age! No room to dance. However, we were hassled by a drunk and very annoying punter who plonked himself onto us and actually sat on my lap without warning.. he was rude! The security /bouncers were very quick to react and sorted it straight away and apologised on his behalf and bought us drinks as a sorry.. which I thought was spot on! So thank you for that 😁🙏🏼😁
