About This Pub
Ah, Traitors Gate – what a lovely little find in Grays! I have to say, it's one of those pubs that just hits the spot for a relaxed pint. The staff are absolute stars; they're so chatty and professional, making you feel like you're catching up with mates rather than just grabbing a drink. And the beers? Well, they've got a brilliant range of cask ales that are always in top condition, plus the prices are spot on – none of that eye-watering markup you see elsewhere. The atmosphere is just right too, with natural light pouring in, a pool table for a bit of fun, and TVs if you're up for watching the game. It's open seven days a week from noon, which is handy for a weekend session or a midweek wind-down. But, and I have to be honest here, it's not all perfect – that whiff of urine when you first enter is a real shame and could spoil the experience for some. It's probably something they could sort out with the drains, but as it stands, it's a bit off-putting. Oh, and it's a bit of a trek from the main drag, so you might want to drive or hop in a cab if you're not in the mood for a walk. All in all, though, if you're after a solid, no-fuss pub with great brews and a safe feel, it's worth checking out – just keep your expectations in check for that one niggle.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
-
They've got a fantastic selection of well-kept cask ales at really reasonable prices – like £3.40 a pint, which is a bargain these days.
-
The atmosphere is spot on, especially in the afternoon, with a proper old-school pub vibe, complete with a pool table, TVs, and plenty of natural light.
-
It's a safe and relaxed spot, perfect for enjoying a quiet drink without any nonsense, and it's open every day from midday till 11 PM.
Cons
-
There's a noticeable smell of urine as soon as you step inside, which might be down to the drains or something, and it really puts a damper on things.
-
It's a fair walk from the town centre, so you might need to plan your trip if you're not local.

Top old school pub staff Very friendly staff and atmosphere was great / a great find
fantastic atmosphere even in the late afternoon, great selection of well kept cask ales on offer. friendly service , pool table, TVs and lots of natural light. Quite a walk from town but again like the traitors gate on the other side both pubs are worth the effort
Great local pub. Bar staff very friendly and professional. Good beers.
The reason I don't give 5 stars is because of the smell. The place stinks of urine from the moment you go through the door. Maybe something to do with the drains, not sure, but they should sort it.
Visited late afternoo/earl evening on a Monday. A nice welcome from the customers and bar staff. Five real ales on and our group tried four of them. All in excellent condition.
The best real ale pub in Grays and miles around. Price great ..£3.40 all strengths. Proper pub atmosphere. No idiots. Safe.
