About This Pub

Ah, the Ship in Grays – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper community hub, you know? From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got this lovely old building that's been done up really nicely, with staff who go out of their way to make you feel at home, like the landlady who's been there for years and clearly puts her heart into it. The live music is a real treat, getting everyone in a cheerful mood, and when the food's on point, like that fish and chips or a solid pint of Guinness, it's just spot on for a laid-back afternoon or evening with mates. But let's be honest, it's not all perfect – some meals have come out overcooked or overly salty, which is a shame when you're looking forward to a good nosh. The atmosphere can feel a bit lacking on busier days, and those extra charges for sauces might sting a little. Overall, though, with a solid 4.1 rating, it's worth popping in if you're nearby, just keep expectations realistic and maybe skip the mixed grill if you're picky about your meat.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly welcoming and accommodating, like Sam the landlady who's clearly passionate about the place after running it for over six years.
  • It's a beautiful, tastefully decorated period building that feels warm and inviting, with plenty of space and a lovely layout.
  • They've got live music from the house band, which really livens things up and draws in a happy crowd.
  • Some of the food hits the spot, like the fish and chips, roasties, and a great pint of Guinness – perfect for a relaxed meal.
  • It's generally clean and well-maintained, making it a solid spot for a casual get-together.
Cons
  • A few dishes can be hit or miss, with things like chicken, pork, and beef coming out overcooked and tough to eat.
  • Some items, like the chicken strips, were reported as too salty, which might put off those after a simple, flavoursome bite.
  • The atmosphere could do with a bit of a boost, especially on busier nights when it feels a tad ordinary and needs more of that lively pub charm.
  • Little extras, such as a pot of peppercorn sauce, feel a bit pricey at £2.50, which adds up if you're not careful.
  • It can get crowded on Friday evenings, so if you're after a quiet spot, you might want to time your visit right.

I came here again today to complete some work on site... Sam (Landlady) is extremely accommodating to my visits she has had the pub for over 6 years and really takes a pride in her pub.... The Ship is a beautiful period building tastefully decorated to a high standard throughout... Attention to detail here is clear to see... Very clean and polished The staff here are very welcoming and friendly. The ship has a Large free carpark and a large outside beer garden for alfresco dining or just relaxing in the hot weather. Simply a great place to eat drink and socialize.. A big thank you to Sam for opening up early for me 👍 (D)😎

Service was great, lovely clean pub with lots of space and nice layout. Food was a let down, meat (chicken, pork and beef) was near inedible with how overdone it was. The saving grace was the roasties and all sides/veg were good. Great pint of Guinness too.

Ordinary pub food. I think chicken strips was too salty. However the best dish was fish and chips. Crowded on Friday evening as would expect. Service was ok. Young man serving the food was very polite. Tried this pub for first time. I honestly think that atmosphere needs some serious improvements/refurbishment. And work on menu too. Otherwise good local pub.

Very pleasant. Went at midday on a Saturday so it was quite quiet as they had just opened. I ordered the mixed grill, it was pretty decent. Not a massive fan of the chicken wings but the steak, gammon and sausage were good. £2.50 for a tiny pot of peppercorn sauce was a bit excessive, but overall the meal was good value. Nice large beer garden and plenty of seating indoors. Seems like it would be a good place for a Friday or Saturday night drink.
