About This Pub

Ah, Tom O' The Wood – it's one of those cosy spots that really captures the essence of a traditional country pub, nestled in the picturesque village of Rowington. I have to say, the location by the canal is an absolute delight; it's just the ticket for a laid-back afternoon with friends, soaking up the scenery while enjoying a pint or two. The team running the place clearly have a passion for what they do, with staff who are warm and attentive, making every visit feel personal and welcoming. And let's not forget the drinks – they've got a solid range that caters to all preferences, which is always a winner in my book. On the food side, it's generally spot on when it comes to fresh, locally sourced homemade meals, and I love that it's so accommodating for dogs, adding to that community feel. But, to be fair, it's not all perfect; there are times when dishes come across as a tad ordinary or overpriced, and a couple of experiences have highlighted inconsistencies that might leave you wanting more. Still, with its high marks overall, I'd say it's well worth checking out – just go in with an open mind and perhaps stick to the stronger options on the menu for a top-notch time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The pub's in a stunning spot by the Grand Union canal, making it perfect for a relaxing escape in the Warwickshire countryside.
  • Staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, always ready with a smile and great service that makes you feel right at home.
  • They've got a cracking selection of drinks, from local ales to something for every taste.
  • The food often hits the mark with fresh, homemade dishes sourced from local suppliers, and it's lovely to see good portions when they get it right.
  • It's wonderfully dog-friendly, so you can pop in with your four-legged mate for a bite or a drink without any fuss.
Cons
  • Some dishes can be a bit bland or uninspired, like that pricey burger that didn't quite live up to the hype.
  • Prices are on the steeper side for what you get, which might leave you feeling it's not the best value.
  • There's a bit of inconsistency with food quality – a few meals have been disappointing, such as the gammon or roast pork that didn't impress.
  • Occasionally, the portions or presentation fall short, which can dampen an otherwise nice visit.

A nice pub in a lovely location. Friendly staff and a great drinks selection. The food, however, was wholly unremarkable, so I can't give five stars. It was expensive yet bland. I had a burger with salad and fries for £18, which was incredibly boring and uninspired. I know that you can't do much to elevate a burger and chips, but there was no flair, no flavour, just stodge.

What a disappointment. We were in the area and this came up with good reviews so we made the effort to come and eat lunch here. I had a fish finger sandwich which was actually ok, a bit heavy on the batter but still ok. My wife ordered the roast pork bap with sage and onion stuffing and apple sauce, home made coleslaw and chips. When it arrived, the roast pork was totally overdone and was dry and tough. It came in a dry bap with a dry stuffing. The apple sauce was served on the side, as requested, but tasted like a cheap one out of a jar. The 'home made' coleslaw left a puddle of thin 'mayonnaise' on the plate and, again, tasted bought in and cheap. In all, it was inedible and, if food is advertised as being freshly made then it should taste like it. There was no love or skill went into the preparation of this. Shame, we had high hopes.

Found this place whilst at the nearby NT Baddesley Clinton and wanting some lunch with the family. The setting sounded nice but the canal. It didn’t fail to I pressure. Very dog friendly too which was nice to see (although we hadn’t got our dogs with us at the time). Met at the door by friendly staff and shown to table. Although the pub was fairly busy they accommodated us fine. The food was was brilliant (off the lighter bites menu) It’s a beautiful setting and felt a nicely run pub. The gardens are lovely too. There are a number of sheds you can sit in to with dog beds. A good find. Reasonably priced too. Classy and casual interior. Suited us all just fine. Well done Tom O’ The Wood.

Family visit for a birthday party. Staff very welcoming and friendly, atmosphere was relaxed. Our food can be described as excellent quality and taste with overall good value for money (except the Gammon dish which looked like someone had eaten half of it en route to our table. (See pics). The gammon and asparagus were very good, but the “roast potatoes“ amounted to four tiny piece’s which made the dish appear something was missing and a little lost on the plate. Strange really, because all the other dishes were very good portion size. The honey pork belly salad was gorgeous as was the pea and pesto pasta. Finally deserts (brownie and bread and butter pudding with homemade custard) were excellent (albeit the homemade custard was lumpy). Portion size on the deserts was huge. Overall a very nice meal. The Tom O The Wood has some serious local competition in the area and whilst matching the prices of establishments such as The Boot, Orange Tree and Punchbowl, I felt it very slightly fell short. Having said this, do not be put off by this very honest review. We had a very good meal overall, but just felt some of the portion sizes were a little off balance. We will return and would recommend a visit if you have not been.
