About This Pub
Ah, The Black Boy – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper gem in Solihull, you know? From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food really shines through; think hearty meals that leave you satisfied without breaking the bank, and the staff go out of their way to make you feel at home, even on their busier days. The location is an absolute treat too, right by the canal with lovely walks and a garden that's spot on for kids or just soaking up the fresh air. But, let's be straight, it isn't perfect – it can get mobbed sometimes, which might put a dampener on things if you're after a quiet meal, and a few have piped up about the prices not always matching the quality, like with some of the mains feeling a bit ordinary. Overall, though, it's got that warm, community feel that makes it worth a visit, especially if you're up for a relaxed afternoon with mates or family. I'd say give it a go and see for yourself; it's got more hits than misses, and that's saying something for a local spot!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food here is spot on – plenty of folks rave about the meals being lovely, tasty, and great value, especially for a traditional pub lunch.
-
The staff are an absolute delight; they're friendly, efficient, and keep smiling even when things get hectic, which makes for a welcoming vibe.
-
It's in a stunning spot by the canal with fields nearby, plus there's a great garden area with a play space, perfect for families or a relaxing stroll after your pint.
Cons
-
It can get really busy at times, making it a bit of a faff to order food or find a spot, as one person mentioned when they struggled during peak hours.
-
Some dishes might not quite hit the mark for the price; for instance, a couple of reviews felt the food was a tad standard and overpriced for what you get.

Lovely pub on canal. To busy to order food. Great service bar outside takes food orders aswell.. garden with a great play area.
Me and my partner went here today for a meal and the food was lovely and so we're the staff, even tho they were short staffed the food was quick and hot and the staff always had smiles. Would recommend this place
WOW and not in a good way. The food we had was so standard and cheap. I can't believe they charge the prices they do. We were looking forward to a nice country pub style lunch, I ordered the faggots and mushy peas for £10.45 and my friend the slow cooked belly for £19.90 and opted to have it as a roast. It was awful, the faggots seemed to be Mr Brains, the mash out of a packet and the mushy peas out of a tin, this meal is easily a £3 meal. The pork wasn't pork belly more like a slab of pork covered in an overwhelming taste of rosemary, yet the rest of the food was very bland, the potatos not very nice at all the stuffing uncooked.
We were asked quite early into our meal if everything was ok. At this point, we had not tasted everything on the plate, so we hesitantly said yes. As my friend continued to taste the food, it was then she realised how bad it was, I tried all the food on her plate and I agreed. I ate my faggots and mash, it was bog standard but a meal I have eaten many times at home.
We don't like to complain, but it was impossible not to, especially with the amount of food left.
As we were asked early on if our meal was ok and we said yes, apparently you can't change your mind and my friend was charged the full amount (she would have been happy with any gesture of a discount) but was given a compliments card and told to email the team.
We were looking forward to eating, but can safely we won't be returning.
Had a wonderful stop off at The Black Boy last week, after a visit to the NEC. Our meal was amazing and great value, ALL the staff were very friendly and accommodating. This pub is in a stunning location, next to fields and a canal, that you can have a pleasant walk along. Would highly recommend.
definitely a new favourite of mine! My mum and Nan are regulars, and decided to take me here today, it was lovely and didn’t disappoint. Food was very lovely and so was the service, everything was clean and tidy. Highly recommend! And the view was a great sight. 🤍will be returning
