About This Pub
Ah, The Wine Press – it's one of those places that just feels like a hidden gem right by Hollingworth Lake, where you can kick back with some properly good English food that's a nice blend of classic and contemporary. I love how they've got something for everyone, whether you're after a hearty Sunday lunch, a quick coffee with mates, or even a spot for a special occasion with their function suite. The views are just gorgeous, especially on a clear day, and it's dead welcoming for families or if you're popping in with the dog. That said, it does get packed to the gills sometimes, which means you might end up queuing or feeling a tad squeezed in. And while most of the staff are lovely, a few seem a bit off when it's busy, plus the wines aren't quite up to scratch for what they charge. Overall, it's a solid choice for a relaxed outing, but I'd say go midweek if you want it a bit quieter – you'll still get that warm, friendly vibe without the hustle.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The views over Hollingworth Lake are absolutely stunning, making it a perfect spot for a relaxing meal with a scenic backdrop.
-
The food is spot on – a great mix of traditional and modern English dishes, with options for everything from a light lunch to a full three-course meal, and it's all freshly prepared.
-
It's dog-friendly, which is brilliant if you're out for a walk and fancy a stop-off with your furry friend.
-
The atmosphere is warm and relaxed, ideal for a casual get-together or even a sunny Sunday afternoon with the family, plus they've got a kids' menu to keep everyone happy.
-
Service is generally friendly, and the place is spotlessly clean, which always makes for a more enjoyable visit.
Cons
-
It can get really busy, especially on weekends or sunny days, so you might have to wait for a table or deal with a bit of a crowd.
-
Some of the staff don't always seem in the cheeriest mood when things are hectic, which can take the edge off the experience.
-
The wines by the glass are a bit disappointing for the price – you might want to stick to other drinks if that's your thing.

The food is good 90% of the time and just enough. I celebrated my birthday with my parents this evening and we all had a light meal. The atmosphere is great. Their are a couple of staff members that struggle with smiling but I imagine that's just because it was busy.
Having recently moved back to this side of the border, I was looking for a decent dog friendly pub that serves good food.
Happy to say this place ticked those boxes. I've just had the best haddock, chips and mushy peas this side of the east coast.
A fabulous way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon. Very busy but tables do get vacated and plenty of spaces to wait around . Popular with bikers so lots of people watching and motorcycle viewing to do. Recommended.
A shining light of hospitality right on the lake front. Gorgeous sundown views over the lake and the rowers and the geese. Wicked double espresso with a shot of vodka, decent enough espresso martini, surprisingly poor wines by the glass considering the prices - £7.60 for a large serve of an extremely mediocre Argentinian Malbec I certainly wouldn't expect to pay more than £6 at the supermarket. But it doesn't actually matter. It's such a refreshing and welcoming place in the middle of a long hike, lovely young Italian staff at the bar (from Napoli), extremely accommodating. Highly recommend it.
Absolutely amazing little place right next to the lake just beautiful on a sunny day.
Staff very friendly and nice always full of smile.
Inside is spotless clean.
The food is very good priced and always spot on with taste. Gets very busy on sunny weekend but during the week is just perfect.
