About This Pub

Ah, The White Cross – what a gem it is! From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, this place really shines with its incredibly friendly staff who go out of their way to make sure you're looked after, whether it's answering questions about the menu or sorting out booking changes without a fuss. The food's a highlight too; folks rave about the Sunday roasts and other hearty options that hit the spot just right, and it's all served up in a cosy atmosphere that's perfect for a relaxed chat or celebrating something special. On the flip side, though, the varying opening times, especially on Sundays, might leave you scratching your head, and with prices on the moderate side, it could add up if you're popping in regularly. Overall, it's a solid choice for anyone after a proper pub experience – the positives far outweigh the niggles, and I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're in the area for a pint and some good vibes.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely brilliant – so friendly and attentive, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • The food is spot on; think delicious roasts and tasty dishes like roasted aubergine that leave you wanting more.
  • It's got a lovely canalside location, perfect for a relaxing pint or meal with a bit of scenic charm.
  • The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with a cosy vibe that's great for celebrations or just catching up with mates.
  • They're flexible with bookings and handle changes smoothly, which is a real plus for unplanned visits.
Cons
  • The operating hours can seem a bit inconsistent, especially on Sundays, which might confuse you when planning a trip.
  • With a moderate price level, it might feel a tad pricey for everyday pub grub if you're watching your wallet.
  • While the reviews are glowing, the high popularity could mean it's busy at peak times, making it harder to get a table straight away.

We were seated almost immediately, and the staff were all incredibly attentive to us. The staff in particular were very friendly, and knew their menu extremely well, and answered all of our questions with little hesitation. Our food was served promptly, and it was quite good. Everything costs us about £56 (2 main dishes, 1 soup, 1 side, 1 Guinness pint). [side note: we really enjoyed the guinness.]

The canalside position drew us into this pub today. Once inside the staff were so welcoming and we were treated like old friends! The manager was completely on it, very attentive to everyone, she knew exactly how to treat people and all of the staff were great too. We thoroughly enjoyed the food and drink, our meals were served hot and in good time. On leaving the pub we went up to the bridge outside and decided to take a photo with the pub in the background, the manager and some of her staff spotted us and came outside and waved for the photo. This made our evening and we are very appreciative for the wonderful efforts made by all the staff today. Thank you so much 🙏

A Hidden Gem – Absolutely Brilliant! I’ve been to many pubs in my life, but The White Cross in Lancaster truly stands out. I honestly have no words — from the moment we walked in, we were welcomed with such warmth and friendliness by the staff. Every single person serving was amazing — so genuine, helpful, and upbeat. We ordered some starters, and they were absolutely delicious — full of flavour and beautifully presented. The atmosphere of the place was perfect. Even the customers around us were lovely — friendly, respectful, and just added to the good vibes all around. I would give this place 10 out of 10 without hesitation. What a brilliant experience! Can’t wait to come back.

Went here for my Dad’s birthday. For the food was so delicious - I got the roasted aubergine, and it was so delicious. My dad got the chicken supreme and also said it was lovely. The service was so attentive, and the staff seemed lovely. Definitely recommend!

Hello, We celebrated the graduation of my daughter at this pub in the middle of July. The stuff was very helpful even we had to change the booking three times because of various reasons. We sat inside, the atmosphere was very cosy, quiet - not like in other pubs when you have to shout to let someone hear you. The food was excellent as well, we ordered a few starters and main course, then dessert. Didn't have to wait long time before it was served. The service was spot on! Starting from when we were welcomed at the entrance and the waitresses looking after us and our guest during all time when we were there! Even to the point when the waitress was apologizing for the service charge included and was emphasising that it was voluntary and could be taken off. I didn't mind, I think the stuff deserved the tips and even a bit more on top of it. Definitely great place to have a dinner, enjoy a time with friends and family and and eat some excellent food! Best regards, Rustam.
