About This Pub
Oh, The Golden Lion in Lancaster is one of those pubs that just sticks with you, you know? It's got this rich history with whispers of ghosts and witches, which adds a fun, quirky edge to the place without being over the top. What really shines is the live music – Tuesdays' open mic is an absolute riot, with all sorts of performers turning up, and there are regular gigs that make it feel alive and vibrant. Pair that with a solid lineup of beers and spirits at wallet-friendly prices, and you've got yourself a recipe for a memorable evening. The staff are proper legends, always making sure everyone feels included and sorting out sports on the telly if that's your thing. On the downside, it's a compact spot, so things can get a bit squished when it's busy, and I've heard a few grumbles about the floors not being the cleanest, which might not suit everyone. All in all, it's a gem for anyone after a mix of relaxation and excitement, but it's worth popping in on a quieter night if you fancy avoiding the crowds.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
It's got a cracking live music scene with events like open mic nights every Tuesday and folk sessions on Sundays, making it a brilliant spot for discovering new talent or just enjoying a singalong
-
The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with comfy seating, a roaring fire, and that cosy, historic vibe that makes you feel right at home
-
They offer a fantastic selection of local ales, whiskies, and gins at inexpensive prices, plus pizzas that come highly recommended for a quick bite
-
The staff are friendly and attentive, always up for a chat and happy to sort out live sports on their screens if you ask nicely
-
It's a great place for a relaxed afternoon or an energetic night, with plenty of events to keep things lively and help you make new mates
Cons
-
The venue is on the small side, so it can get a bit crowded during popular events, making it tricky to find space
-
Some folks have mentioned the floors can be sticky at times, which takes away from the charm just a tad, though it's not a deal-breaker

Best place in Lancaster, hands down!
Mental nights and comfortable afternoons in front of the fire.
Tuesday night's open mic with Matt Appleton is well worth checking out. Eclectic doesn't even begin to describe the range of performers.
My uncle Digger also says that their pizzas are "bang on". Xxx
Proper old school! A boozer with just a couple of blokes at the bar, a roaring fire, a pool table and a few well kept local ales - in good nick and under a fiver. The floor was sticky, but it felt great! Blues music playing away discretely in the background. Smashing!
Big shout out of love to all the wonderful folk who attended Dub In The Pub sound system first dance of 2025 in February.
The Buddhakkan Headset and Daddy1Love had the place rocking and skanking from sound check to finish with pure vinyl reggae vibrations.
Big love to Jon the landlord, Emily and Mark non stop behind the bar all night.
Keep your eye out for a very special night coming up on Saturday March 29th, The Buddhakkan Headset's 60th Birthday celebrations.
A whole bunch of quality djs playing everything from reggae, dub, drum and bass, techno, jungle, and ting, all on lovely vinyl all night long.
Featuring the Dub In The Pub djs and a blazing freestyle set or two from The Buddhakkan Headset and powered by the Dub In The Pub sound system.
It's an open invitation to all like minded souls, it's totally free and there's the finest Guinness in town.
See you by the speakers.
Peace and love to all.
A traditional old pub with a good selection of beers on offer.
The barmaid was friendly and attentive and there is a variety of seats, couches etc to chill out in.
I loooved it, first day there because a friend invited me to listen to artists play, and damn I fell in love. Teusday nights, musicians come out to play and it's free to participate, and there's ample space to sit, in or in open space. It's warm and cozy, I just didn't see time pass, totally recommend if you're a music lover❤
And in a British bar, Booze is a necessity 🤩
