About This Pub

Ah, The Wheatsheaf – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local spot in the heart of Manchester, you know? I've had a look at the reviews, and folks are really buzzing about the quick and friendly service; apparently, you can get served in no time even when it's packed, which is a godsend on a busy night out. The old-school charm is spot on too – think lively chats, a bit of karaoke if you're lucky, and that welcoming vibe that makes you want to stick around for another round. Oh, and the outside seating is brilliant for sunnier days, letting you soak up the Northern Quarter's energy without the hustle inside. On the flip side, it's not the place if you're after a wide selection of beers; a few reviewers mentioned it's more about Guinness and the like, so real ale enthusiasts might find themselves a bit underwhelmed. Still, with its clean setup and budget-friendly prices, it's a solid choice for a laid-back pint. All in all, if you're up for a genuine, unpretentious pub experience, I'd say give it a go – it's got that warm, community feel that makes you feel right at home, but just keep in mind it might not wow you with variety.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The service is top-notch – bar staff are super quick and efficient, even when it's busy, so you won't be waiting long for your drink.
  • It's got that classic, old-school pub vibe that's really welcoming and lively, especially in the Northern Quarter of Manchester.
  • Outside seating is a nice touch for when the weather's on your side, making it perfect for a casual catch-up.
  • The place is kept clean, from the bar to the toilets, which always makes for a more enjoyable visit.
  • Prices are inexpensive, so you can enjoy a good pint without breaking the bank.
Cons
  • The beer selection is a bit limited; it's not the spot for real ale lovers, which might disappoint if that's your thing.
  • It feels very much like a locals' pub, so if you're after something more varied or touristy, it might not hit the mark.
  • From what I've seen, it doesn't have a huge range of drinks on tap, so options could feel a tad restricted for some tastes.

This is a proper locals pub in the middle of the Northern Quarter. Only been a handfull of times in the last 50 years as it does not sell real ale. Luckily Casta knows that you can get a good pint of Guinness for me and Cruzcampo for him. Outside seating for the better days. I like the open plan interior, has a good vibe. There is a DJ station. I wonder if anybody still tinkles the ivories of the old Joanna at the back? Great Landlord, ROBERT! He is worth 5* on his own.

I dislike pubs, especially town centre ones, and can’t abide the whole pub culture thing. It quite tea total as I’ll have a glass of wine when dining, but that’s as far as I go. So when we (partner & two friends) made a quick pit stop as we needed the loo, I was hoping to get a quick refreshment and clear off immediately, quasi unnoticed. However the warmth and friendliness of both Landlady and customers was pleasantly inviting. Nothing over the top…..just nice. We still only stayed for one as we were on a shopping mission, however I will certainly make it a place to stop next time I’m in Manchester. Well done👏👏 Next time I pop in I might even have half a shandy😉

Nothing interesting on tap so we both had G&Ts. Service was good. Seems like a locals pub. Toilets were clean.

Popped in Saturday night, it was 3 deep at the bar and yet I had a pint in my hand within a minute. Best bar staff in Manchester, pulling pints for 2 or 3 punters at once.

I really liked it here. Old school pub. We have one in my town, so I had to see this. I left before the karaoke was about to start but it looked very lively mid day. I'll be back.
