About This Pub

Oh, the Castle Hotel on Oldham Street is one of those gems in Manchester that just draws you in with its rich history and welcoming feel – it's been around since 1776, can you believe it? I love how they've kept that old-school charm with the tiled bars and cosy nooks, making it perfect for a relaxed catch-up or sinking into the atmosphere with a pint. The cask ales from Robinsons are reliably excellent, and it's fantastic to see them supporting local musicians, which really adds to the lively vibe on music nights. That said, it's not all perfect; the prices for drinks like Guinness can sting a bit, especially if you're out for a big night, and if you're not keen on the music scene or it's a quiet evening, the beer selection might not wow you with variety. Overall, it's a solid choice for a good time with friends, as long as you go in with realistic expectations – I'd definitely pop back for the music and ales, but maybe keep an eye on the wallet!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The historic charm of the place is absolutely lovely, with its roots dating back to 1776 and attractive tiled bars that make you feel like you're stepping into the past.
  • They've got a cracking selection of cask ales from Robinsons and guests, which are spot on and really hit the spot for beer enthusiasts.
  • It's a brilliant spot for live music, supporting local bands and creating a lively, welcoming atmosphere that gets everyone in the mood.
  • The layout is great, with cosy rooms like the vault and bar parlour, plus a small outdoor yard for a bit of fresh air and seating.
Cons
  • Pints can be a bit pricey, like that £6.80 for a Guinness – it might make you think twice if you're planning a long session.
  • The beer range isn't always the most varied, so if you're after something really unique, you might find it a tad limited.
  • If there's no band playing, it can feel a little quiet or background-music heavy, which isn't for everyone depending on the vibe you're after.

Lovely historic pub on Oldham Street. Robinsons cask beers plus guests. Nice vault at the front, an attractive bar parlour and a larger music room.

An attractive building from the outside, and small bar area at the front with seating round the back. There seemed a good selection of beers/ ales, but £6.80 for an average pint of Guinness was a little harsh. Great venue for live music however, and enjoy the fact they offer small bands/ musicians a place to play.

Decent pub known for its live music. Nothing going on during our visit. A lot of drink options on this street. We sampled several.

Fantastic pub with a long history dating back to 1776. Attractive tiled bar and has a couple of rooms and a very small outside yard with a few seats. We'll known as a lively music venue giving local talent an opportunity to perform. Excellent cask ales. Friendly, welcoming atmosphere.

This is 100% a music pub, if there isn't a band on there's something playing in the background, which was quite fun when you can hear the guys in the taproom singing this charming man. . Personally i don't think the beer range was too good but they were all on form and very drinkable . This is a very friendly and welcoming place for a beer and i would defiantly go back,All in all not bad at all.
