About This Pub

Ah, The Wellington – what a lovely spot it is, tucked away on the Strand in London. I've got to say, it's got that timeless charm of a classic British pub, with its rich history and a real sense of tradition that's just spot on for a casual get-together. The pies are where it really shines; folks rave about the meat ones, and from what I've heard, they're packed with hearty flavours that leave you wanting more. Pair that with a solid selection of beers and other British classics, and you've got yourself a winner for a relaxed evening out. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect – the service can sometimes drag a bit, making it feel like you're waiting ages just to order another round. And if you're thinking of grabbing a coffee to finish off, you might want to think again; it's a bit on the weak side and doesn't quite satisfy. Still, for what it's worth, the overall vibe is so inviting that I'd definitely pop back for another go. If you're heading out for a pint and some grub, give it a try – it's got that genuine pub feel, with the highs outweighing the lows for a balanced night.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The historic atmosphere is just brilliant – it really feels like a proper British pub with that warm, welcoming vibe.
  • Their pies are an absolute highlight; the meat ones come highly recommended and are packed with flavour.
  • A great selection of beers and classic British dishes makes it a top spot for a relaxed meal and drink.
  • Overall, it's a lively place that captures the essence of a traditional London pub, perfect for catching up with mates.
Cons
  • Service can be a bit inconsistent; sometimes it's tricky to get the staff's attention when you need it.
  • A few dishes might not quite hit the mark, like the rabbit pie which turned out to be mostly mash with not much rabbit.
  • The coffee is pretty disappointing – it's weak and not at all milky, so best to stick to the beers.
  • The stairwell is quite steep, which could be a hassle if you're not feeling steady or have mobility concerns.

Good pub. Admittedly I was on a bender so not remembering specific details as to why but I do recall good feelings and general sense that this is a proper pub. will have to head back sober to confirm

We came on a Saturday night and the meat pies were recommended to us by the waitress and two patrons who had just finished eating. They were absolutely phenomenal and I'm sure we will try a sad attempt when we return home and be disappointed our DIY version can't compare. This was a great place we stumbled on.

I thought I would try the Rabbit pie, having never eaten rabbit before. Elmer Fudd used to say that it's 'Rabbit season ' but unfortunately, prior to getting my Rabbit pie, Bugs Bunny apparently jumped out of the pot since there was very little rabbit to be seen in the pie. Almost entirely mashed potatoes.

Came here for a dinner and the fish pie was really tasty , I just wanted it in a pastry edge and top but was in a small bowl , still good though. Had a few beers and a coffee. The coffee was terrible was like drinking really weak coffee and not milky at all . Great place and vibe , steep stairwell. Great location

The Wellington is a solid pub with a decent selection of classic British meals and drinks. I went for the Grilled Sea Bass which was cooked well and tasted great. The other meals also looked nice using quality ingredients. The service could be improved, we found it hard to get the attention of staff to get seated and there was a bit of a delay with meals coming out for our party of 6. Overall good experience and if you’re after an easy place to dine in Stand I’d recommend.
