About This Pub
Ah, the Nell Gwynne – what a lovely spot it is, tucked away just off the Strand in the heart of London. I've got to say, it's one of those places that pulls you in with its rich history, dating back to 1667, and you can almost feel the stories of old actors and infamous characters lingering in the air. The vibe is just spot on: cosy and welcoming, with a free jukebox that's loaded with timeless classics, making it easy to have a laugh and lose track of time with friends. The drinks selection is another winner – they've got a great range of local beers and spirits that go down a treat, especially if you're after something a bit special like a Weiss beer. But, and I have to be straight with you, it's not all perfect; some of the bar food, like the pies or charcuterie, has had mixed reviews, often coming across as ordinary for the price tag, which might leave you a bit underwhelmed. Plus, things can get pricey, so it's worth keeping an eye on your wallet if you're planning a long session. Overall, though, it's a real gem for anyone wanting an authentic pub experience in the city – I'd pop in for the atmosphere and music any day, just maybe skip the food and focus on the bevvies!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
It's got that wonderful historic charm, being one of London's oldest pubs since 1667, which really adds to the atmosphere and makes you feel like you're stepping back in time.
-
The selection of beers, wines, and spirits is spot on, with local options and even some Weiss beer – perfect for a proper pint after a wander around the Strand.
-
The free jukebox is an absolute treat, packed with classics from Bowie, the Pixies, and more; it's brilliant for setting the mood and having a singalong with mates.
-
The pub has a cosy, lively vibe that's just right – not too touristy, and it's a hidden gem that's easy to stumble upon for a relaxed catch-up.
Cons
-
Some of the food can be a bit disappointing; for instance, the pie or cheese charcuterie might not live up to the price, leaving you wishing for better quality.
-
Drinks can feel a tad pricey, like a pint at £7, which might make you think twice if you're out for a budget-friendly night.
-
It can get quite busy, especially in such a central spot, so you might have to squeeze in or wait for a table during peak times.

Lovely little pub full of character with a good selection of beers. Tried a pie whilst there which was very ordinary for the price which was extraordinary. Would definitely go again but just for the beer.
Great pub. Love the free jukebox. Great to be able to select our own music. Lovely small intimate pub. Classic for the area. Just don’t order the cheese charcuterie. It was awful. Not the worse I got in London. But a close second!!
For a proper London pub so close to Covent Garden to be as good as this is quite amazing. Not touristy with a FREE jukebox loaded by the likes of Bowie, the Pixies, Bloc Party and Nick Cave it’s my go to bar in town. And they serve bottles of weiss beer too. What’s not to like ?
Plus for anyone negatively reviewing the music and the volume… there are plenty of London pubs who will quietly serve you their choice of bland background music. A pub that plays decent music is a rare find that should be celebrated :)
What a fantastic pub. There has been a drinking establishment on this site since the 1600's according to one of the staff. We literally stumbled across it today after I glimpsed flowers down the side alley. Lovely piece of London history.
Cool little gem of a pub!! A pint of beer was £7. But what I liked most was the music and the fun atmosphere with nice crowd on a Saturday night.
The last drink bell rang about 10:40 pm.
If I’m in the area, I will definitely go again.
