About This Pub

Ah, The Tavern on the Hill, tucked away in Walthamstow – it's one of those pubs that just warms your cockles with its welcoming feel. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the staff are absolute gems, always ready with a smile and a helpful suggestion, whether you're pondering a pint or perusing the menu. The food really steals the show, mind you; those Sunday roasts are legendary, with perfectly cooked meats, heaps of trimmings, and even a nod to Jamaican flavours that add a fun twist. Pair that with a cracking range of beers and wines, and you're in for a treat. It's brilliantly family-oriented too, with sports on the telly and games to keep things lively, making it ideal for a laid-back afternoon or evening out. On the flip side, though, the inside decor is a bit straightforward – nothing fancy, and some have mentioned it'd be nicer with a few more cosy spots to settle in. Plus, being shut on Mondays can be a bit of a nuisance if you're after a quick drink mid-week. All in all, it's a solid choice for us lot who appreciate good grub and good company, but it might not wow you with its looks. Worth popping in for a proper taste, I'd say!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
  • The food is spot on, especially those Sunday roasts – think juicy beef, lamb, and even Jamaican-inspired dishes that are packed with flavour and generous portions.
  • They've got a fantastic selection of beers on tap, including hazy pale ales and wines served at just the right temperature.
  • It's a proper family-friendly spot with entertainment like sports on multiple screens, board games, and books to keep everyone entertained.
  • The atmosphere is welcoming and relaxed, perfect for a casual get-together or a bite after a long week.
Cons
  • The interior feels a bit basic and simple, with some folks wishing for more comfy seating like sofas to really lounge in.
  • It's closed on Mondays, which might put a damper on plans if you're looking for a mid-week pint.
  • While the food and service shine, the overall decor doesn't quite match up, making it feel a tad underwhelming on first glance.

What a lovely friendly place. Came here with the Mrs for a Sunday roast dinner and wasn’t disappointed. Excellent beef and the lamb wasn’t far behind, but the homemade mint sauce levelled the score. A superb pint of hazy pale ale and a nice bottle of Shiraz at the perfect temperature , what more could you want for £100.

We just had the roast with the new kitchen menu and it was amazing! Perfectly cooked and presented Chicken, beef and pork with all the trimmings. Generous portions, great flavours and seasoning and lovely staff (as usual!). Fab range of beers on tap too!

Great family friendly pub with diverse adult entertainment throughout the week and weekends. Staff are amazingly friendly and helpful if you are unsure what to drink. Sports are shown on multiple screens, board games and books to read are available as well 👍🏼

Attended Tavern on the Hill today with my cousin after finding out that Jamshack have taken over the kitchen and doing not only jamaican cuisine but traditional roast dinner on a Sunday. I must admit the food did not disappoint. My cousin and I ordered salmon served with rice and peas, salad and homemade jerk sauce. Presentation, portion size was just right!👌🏿 It was delicious!!!😋 Salmon cooked to perfection and nicely seasoned. The rice and peas was flavourful rice grains nicely separated with a nice hint of coconut and and the salad was a colourful addition. We also ordered macn n cheese which was hands down the nicest mac n cheese I have had🙌🏿🙌🏿🔥🔥🔥, coleslaw was nice and crunchy, plantain a little over ripe but very nice and sweet and the chicken wings were nice and crispy, flavourful, presented really nice and the jerk sauce was sweet and slightly hot to suit all pallettes. A great way to spend my Sunday, glorious weather, great service and even better food . I will definitely be returning!😋😊

Had a very nice brunch here. Family friendly staff and environment. Decoration is simple, would be nice to see a few sofas etc perhaps in the future as the inside, while clean and consistently furnished is somewhat basic. Breakfast was delicious. I had the Avocado Hummus and my wife had the Cauliflower option. I also had a lager which was excellent. Only criticism is that while they accommodated my request for a fried egg instead of a poached one. I requested that the egg be cooked over-hard, with the yolk being very firm/non runny but when it arrived it was a little bit runny. Small thing tbh - I'll definitely be visiting them to try more things from thier menu in the near future. 8/10 Would recommend.
