About This Pub

Ah, The Square Bottle – it's one of those dependable Wetherspoon pubs that you can always count on for a solid night out in Chester. From the reviews I've had a look at, people are really taken with the lively atmosphere; it's buzzing, especially if you're there for something like the races, and even when it's jam-packed, the staff keep things running smoothly with their friendly service. The food hits the spot too – think tasty options like Chicken Tikka Masala that pair perfectly with a pint – and it's all at prices that make you wonder why you'd go anywhere else. That said, it's not without its downsides; it can feel a bit overwhelming when it's heaving, and you might struggle to find a table or deal with uncleared spots that need a quick sort-out. Still, for anyone after a casual spot to catch up with mates over a drink, it's a winner overall, as long as you're prepared for the odd bit of hustle.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely buzzing, especially during events like the races – it's lively and really gets you in the spirit of things
  • Prices are spot on for a Wetherspoon; you get affordable drinks and tasty food without breaking the bank
  • Staff are friendly and handle the crowds like pros, keeping service prompt even when it's packed to the rafters
  • A cracking selection of ales and other drinks, with some cosy nooks for a more relaxed chat
  • The interior is bright and well-styled, with nice touches like boxed seating that make it feel welcoming
Cons
  • It can get incredibly busy, making it a real challenge to snag a seat and enjoy your time without standing around
  • Tables aren't always cleared quickly, so you might end up shifting dirty plates or wiping down yourself
  • There are occasional glitches with ordering via the app, which can put a dampener on things
  • Cleanliness could use a bit more attention during peak times, as it's not always up to scratch

Visited Wetherspoons during the races, so it was absolutely packed and I couldn’t find a seat — ended up standing for most of my visit. But honestly, I didn’t mind at all because the atmosphere was great, the food was lovely, and the staff were so nice despite how busy it was. I love Spoons anyway, so it was still a good time!

We had a good time here as in every Wetherspoon. The service was good and prompt. We were surprised that the place is full even on a weekday, but that’s the way Chester is, so no complaints. We sat at one of the cozy nooks, with a table like as in a groove. Had a good time here, and the loo is fab as always.

This was a superb pub for drinking, with a bright and well styled interior! The pillars and boxed seating in some areas are really nice, counter is well-presented too. Christmas decorations are pretty and toilets were fine, cleanliness as a whole is consistent. I had a tasty Chicken Tikka Masala with rice and seating is comfortable, table was well kept too!

A bustling bar with lots of good quality ales on offer. Service is pretty quick despite how busy the pub is and there are lots of tables. It could do with a good clean however and old glasses were on tables as you get a table. Worth popping in for the really good selection of real cask ales on offer.

So when I arrived there was about 3 or 4 tables not cleared or whipped down so I had to move my plates to the bar for them and wipe it down myself , I gave the benefit of the doubt on this as it looked busy. I ordered off the app and the transaction went through ok but there was an issue of the food coming out before we had our drinks , they finally arrived 10 minutes into eating our meals I would advise that the staff focus more on there customer service and the plan of the site too because I seen someone walking around for a few minutes looking at every table for a number , that’s a little bit embarrassing Overall I give it a 3 on service because of the , the un cleaned tables , late drinks and not knowing the plan South Korean chicken is a winner tho 🌶️
