About This Pub

Ah, The Spread Eagle—it's one of those classic country pubs that just feels like a proper British gem, doesn't it? Tucked away in Rolleston-on-Dove near Burton-on-Trent, this place has bags of character from its 16th-century roots, and I love how they've kept that old-school charm alive with beautiful gardens for summer sipping and crackling fires for the colder months. The staff are an absolute delight, always making you feel welcome, and the food hits the mark with hearty favourites that pair brilliantly with their well-stocked bar of cask ales and gins. It's spot on for a relaxed day out, especially if you're walking the dog or exploring the nearby trails. That said, it's not all perfect—service can drag a bit when it's quiet, which is a shame, and the lighting might be too moody for some, making meals feel a tad underwhelming. Plus, a few folks have noted that prices seem a bit steep for what's on offer, or that drinks don't always pack the punch you'd expect. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for a good night out; just go in with realistic expectations, and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The historic charm of this 16th-century building really adds a special touch, making you feel like you're stepping back in time while enjoying a pint.
  • The atmosphere is wonderfully warm and welcoming, with beautiful gardens perfect for a sunny day and cosy log fires for those chilly evenings.
  • Staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, always ready with a smile and quick to make you feel at home.
  • The food and drinks are spot on—think hearty pub classics and well-kept ales that hit the spot, especially if you're after something traditional.
  • It's a great spot for dog walkers and explorers, being dog-friendly and near lovely local walks, which makes it ideal for a relaxed outing.
Cons
  • Service can be a bit slow at times, even when it's not too busy, which might leave you waiting a tad longer than you'd like for your order.
  • The lighting is quite dim in places, which could feel romantic but might make it tricky to enjoy your meal properly if you're after something brighter.
  • Some dishes come across as overpriced or a bit underwhelming, like that odd eggplant parmigiana that didn't quite live up to expectations.
  • Drinks might not always be as robust as you'd hope, with a few mentions of them seeming a little watery now and then.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 5 stars Stopped by The Spread Eagle on a quiet Sunday evening and was really impressed. Even without trying the food, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming—exactly what you’d hope and expect in a village pub. The staff were friendly, the drinks well-kept, and there was a genuine sense of community —- especially meeting two brothers had grown up in the village and had returned for a family event! It’s the kind of place where you instantly feel at ease. Looking forward to returning soon, and will sample the menu next time! Thanks 🍷🍷

Tasty food, plated nicely. Very friendly service. Lighting was a little dim, may be pleasantly ambient for a romantic evening but not so sure when eating.

Visited here on a Wednesday evening. Plenty of parking and loads of seating available inside and out. Really nice to sit outside here, but service was a little slow, given they weren't busy. Food and beer very good, would recommend.

Visited today with friends as was pleasantly surprised. We hadn't been for a while having had a couple of not so good visits but today was very good. The food was tasty and well cooked, we had Katsu chicken bowl and fish and chips. The staff as usual were also very good, our server today was Reegan who was very attentive and did an excellent job.

Very average, very overpriced. The eggplant parmigiana was the strangest parmigiana i’ve ever seen and the drinks seemed pretty watery. Cute venue though, much nicer in summer
