About This Pub

Ah, The Beacon Hotel – it's one of those places in Burton-on-Trent that you drive past and think, 'That looks like a proper spot for a pint and a plate.' From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, it's got this warm, traditional feel that's just inviting, with a team that's genuinely passionate about serving up fresh, homecooked grub alongside some cracking drinks. Most folks rave about the food being delicious and well-presented, especially for family dos or big gatherings, and that garden area sounds like a dream in the summer with its seating, bouncy castle, and events – perfect for keeping the kids entertained while you catch up with friends. The service really shines too; stories of helpful staff going the extra mile for birthdays and such make it feel like a community hub. But, and I say this as a mate giving straight advice, it's not flawless – there've been tales of dodgy carvery experiences where the veg was rock-hard or dishes came out cold, which is a shame when you're looking forward to a hearty meal. Overall, with a solid 4.5 rating from the crowd, I'd say it's worth a visit if you're in the area, just maybe play it safe by avoiding peak times or checking what's on offer first. It's that kind of place where the good days far outweigh the bad, but keeping expectations realistic makes for a better outing.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is generally spot-on, with fresh, homecooked meals that hit the mark for everything from quick lunches to family feasts – plenty of veggie and vegan options too, which is brilliant for groups.
  • Service is top-notch; the staff are always friendly, efficient, and full of good humour, making you feel right at home whether you're popping in for a bite or celebrating something special.
  • It's a real family-friendly spot with a spacious garden that's perfect for summer days, complete with seating, a bouncy castle for the little ones, and loads of events to keep things lively.
  • The atmosphere is welcoming and traditional, yet roomy enough for gatherings, and they've got premium drinks to pair with your meal – ideal for a relaxed catch-up with mates.
Cons
  • Food quality can be inconsistent; one visit might leave you disappointed with things like tough veggies or cold dishes, as we've heard from a few folks who had a rough time with the carvery.
  • It might get a bit hit or miss depending on the day, so if you're going for something specific like the Sunday roast, it's worth checking recent experiences to avoid any surprises.
  • While it's generally affordable, the moderate pricing could feel steep if the meal doesn't live up to expectations, especially for families watching the budget.

Recent Reviews

We ate here today for a carvery after seeing some good reviews. I can honestly say it was awful. Peas weee like stones, the beef tasted like hospital meat, roasters were certainly cooked from frozen, yorkshires were cold.. the whole meal was awful, my partner had 2 mouthfuls and I ate a spoonful of mash. My daughter ate here vege which was only green beans and cauliflower. I informed the waitress the food we had was awful and she smiled and continued to take away our full plates and bring the bill. I was shocked to see nothing taken off the bill and requested for a minimum of 1 meal to be taken off as 2 adult meals were practically untouched and I explained again how awful it was. One meal was taken off the bill meaning we still paid for another untouched meal. We aren’t fussy eaters but we feel the quality was very very poor and we wouldn’t return if it was free. If the customer service had been better regarding our concerns we would have returned maybe in the future. Unfortunately we won’t return again. 2 star for atmosphere

Booked a birthday meal here. We've often driven past and thought it looked nice. And it was. The food was very good, tasty and well presented and the service was excellent. We will certainly visit again as there are several items on the menu I want to try.

We’ve been here a few times for food before however last night we held my fiancés 30th birthday. Ollie was so helpful and didn’t stop the whole night, we had a section inside and outside on the decking which was lovely and it worked out well that there was a bouncy castle outside too which the children absolutely loved. The buffet we had was delicious too. Thank you so much, we will definitely book again in the future for any events 😊

We pop in every now and then, and on my most recent visit, I had lunch with my 3 children. We live nearby so didn't stay in the hotel. The service was great, and the food was beyond delicious! All 4 of us were very pleased with the quality of the food. I would highly recommend it!!

Have visited on a number of occasions for big family gatherings and everything always runs smoothly. Food is delicious and the range available is great (lots of veggie/vegan options), and the staff provide a great service, always with a smile and good humour. It can be hard to find somewhere that can accommodate big groups so well, so we will definitely keep returning for those occasions as well as the odd table for 2 or just for drinks.
