About This Pub

Ah, The Sportsman in Bristol – it's one of those pubs that really pulls you in with its warm, community spirit, especially if you're up for watching the footie. From what I've gathered from the chats online, it's got this fantastic setup with multiple bars, a pool hall full of seating, and even a courtyard that's just ace for soaking up the sun while keeping an eye on the match. The food's another highlight; those pizzas and burgers have folks raving, and with weekly deals, it's easy to see why it's a go-to for a bite and a bevvy. But, let's be straight, it's not all perfect – I've heard a few grumbles about the new pool cues being rubbish, which could put off anyone serious about their game, and the pints might hit the wallet a bit harder than at your average local. Still, with a solid 4.4 rating from heaps of reviews, it's clear this place does a lot right, and I'd say it's worth popping in for a pint to judge for yourself. All in all, it's a welcoming spot that strikes a nice balance, though keeping an eye on those little downsides will help you have a top-notch visit.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely buzzing, especially for football matches with a great mix of home and away fans making it feel really inclusive.
  • They've got loads of seating, multiple bars, and a proper pool hall, which is perfect for a casual game or just hanging out.
  • The food's a winner – pizzas and burgers are spot on, with some saying they're the best they've ever had, and there are cracking deals during the week.
  • Pints are generally affordable, and the outdoor courtyard with TVs is brilliant for enjoying a drink in the fresh air while catching the game.
  • It's got a welcoming vibe with friendly staff, and plenty of screens showing live sports, making it a top spot for match days.
Cons
  • The pool cues have been swapped for cheap plastic ones, which takes the fun out of a proper game and has disappointed some regulars.
  • Pints can feel a bit steep at around £5.40 for the cheapest, which might not suit everyone looking for a bargain.
  • There are signs of changes by the new owners that some folks aren't keen on, like it feeling a tad gentrified with overpriced additions.

Good football pub, nice mix of home and away fans. The main bar has two bars and a pool hall and loads of seating. Court yard has tvs outside showing the football and another bar on the other side of the yard with more guest real ales. I thought it was nicer in the back bar and faster service if it's packed. The main bar could have used more staff but were all friendly enough and you actually get given proper glasses, which is always nice. Around £5 a pint.

A real great hidden but not so hidden pub on Gloucester Road! Always a nice atmosphere and nice staff on the bar. Only tried the burgers and can say they’re the best burgers I’ve ever had. Fair play to Fattso! Can’t wait to go back in the summer and experience the outside seating!

Used to be a great pool pub, new owners don’t care about pool and swapped all the normal wooden pool cues for light plastic children’s cues, can hardly have a game with them. Looks like they got some gentrified overpriced burgers in too and bos finesse to make a silly instagram video so I’m sure it is in full decline now. Was fun while it lasted - used to play there a lot but won’t bother again.

Simply put a great pub. Lots of pool tables, easy to get one during the week or arrive early on the weekend. Affordable pints and great pizzas with deals in the week. Lots of TV screens for watching sports which shows all the main games live. Great outdoor area for smoking, drinking and watching sports on the big TV. Great annexe area for even more seating. Music selection is always really good here, never generic pop music. Darts boards upstairs.
