About This Pub

Ah, The Ship Inn – it's one of those classic Manchester locals that just feels like a proper hideaway, you know? I popped in recently and was chuffed with how friendly the staff were; they're always up for a chat and really add to that cosy, homely feel. The beer is spot on too – those traditional ales are just what you want after a stroll along the canal, and it's a cracking spot to sit outside on a nice day. Plus, it's great that they've made it dog-friendly and even sorted out wheelchair access in such an old building – makes it welcoming for everyone. On the flip side, it's a pain that they only take cash; I nearly had to dash off to find an ATM, and with no food available, it's not the place for a full evening out. Still, if you're in Middleton and fancy a straightforward pint in a relaxed setting, it's definitely worth a visit – just come prepared and you'll have a grand time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Friendly staff who make you feel right at home, with a welcoming vibe that's perfect for a casual catch-up
  • Top-notch beer selection, especially the traditional Lees brewery ales that hit the spot after a long day
  • Cosy and inviting atmosphere, especially with its spot right by the canal – ideal for a relaxing pint outdoors
  • Dog-friendly setup, so you can bring your furry friend along, and it's surprisingly wheelchair accessible too, which is a nice touch in an old pub
Cons
  • It's cash only, which can be a bit of a hassle if you're out and about without any notes or coins
  • No food on offer, so you'll have to head elsewhere if you're looking for a bite to go with your drink
  • Closed on Tuesdays, meaning it's not always an option for a mid-week stop, which might throw off your plans

To quote the barmaid "the pub that welcomes dogs better than humans" Great staff, great atmosphere, and as I discovered very wheelchair accessible with accessible toilet too, just one mind, the pub is very old so unexpected & welcome, and what a find! Thank you to the man seated to the side of the lav that held the door open for me and daughter 👍🤝🖖

Good place to stop for a drink whilst walking the Rochdale canal. Cash only, no food, traditional Lees brewery ales

Lovely boozer next to the Rochdale Canal. Cash only which is a disappointment as there is nowhere nearby to get cash (the garage cash machine breaks down often). Would be good for them to get a sum up or similar card reader to pay for drinks.
