About This Pub

Ah, The Hopwood – it's one of those neighbourhood pubs that feels like a proper gem in Middleton, Manchester. From the reviews I've had a look at, most folks are raving about the food; it's fresh, looks great on the plate, and the portions are just right – not skimpy, but not overwhelming either. I love how the staff come across as genuinely warm and efficient, even when the place is buzzing, like during a big footy match or on a sunny afternoon. It's clear they've got a knack for making everyone feel welcome, whether you're popping in for a quick pint or bringing the family for a meal, and they've been praised for being flexible with things like seating large groups or handling accessibility. On the flip side, though, there was that one review that really stuck out – sounds like the owners had a off day with some shocking service involving a kids' football team and a bag of sweets, which could put a damper on things if you're not lucky. Overall, with a solid 4.1 rating, it's worth checking out for a relaxed evening, but I'd say go in with an open mind and maybe avoid peak times if you're after seamless service. It's got that classic pub charm that makes it a go-to spot around here, balancing the good times with a few quirks.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food here is absolutely spot on – fresh, well-presented dishes with generous portions that leave you satisfied without feeling stuffed.
  • Staff are generally friendly and attentive, handling busy times like pros and making you feel right at home.
  • It's got a warm, inviting atmosphere with clean, nicely decorated spaces that make for a cosy spot to relax or catch up with mates.
  • They're really accommodating, whether it's squeezing in a large group or making space for accessibility needs like wheelchairs.
Cons
  • There have been a few instances of poor service from the owners, like that unfortunate episode with a football team and some sweets, which left a bad taste.
  • It can get super busy, especially on weekends, which might mean longer waits for food or drinks even if the staff are trying their best.

The Hopwood is a warm and inviting pub with a good mix of classic and modern dishes on the menu. The food was great – fresh, well presented, and served hot. Portions were generous without being over the top. Staff were friendly and attentive without hovering. The space is clean and nicely decorated, with plenty of seating inside and a decent outdoor area for warmer days. It’s a good spot for a casual meal with family or friends, and there’s usually a relaxed atmosphere even when it’s busy. Parking is easy and the location is convenient just off the main road.

Me and my partner came here over the weekend for a bit of food and to watch the football. Although it was super busy the service was phenomenal. Food came out at a reasonable time and was 10/10! Bar staff were friendly and very efficient working under pressure. Will definitely come back here and recommend to family and friends. We were able to enjoy our food in the front garden which was lovely, as we know there is no food allowed out the back. I highly recommend the scampi!

Absolutely awful service from the lady and man who run this pub . We arrived with a loss u7 football team who just lost their final . We wanted to take them to play and got them a couple bags of sweets to share . The pub does not sell sweets .the lady came and picked up the bag of unopened sweets and snatched them saying they can not be in here we sell food ! I said there sweets to share for kids ? I asked if they sold sweets she said we sell crisps ? I said but the a couple bags of sweets . We had spent well over £100 by this time on drinks . She then began to be very rude , in front of the kids too . Then told us we won’t be served again . Absolutely disgusting behaviour and customer service . Some of the kids then went to the shop next door to get a sweet the owner stood out side and refused to let the kids back in to there parents making them stand on a car park and told the kids there permanently bared ? The kids were between 6-12 . Good kids respectful kids who just wanted a couple of sweets . We went to another pub who were more than happy for the kids to have there sweets . Never again will we step food inside there . Work on how you speak to your paying customers.

Went out for a meal with the family tonight. Tried a few pubs round Middleton that didn't want to know as only an hour or so of food to go. Called in the Hopwood and was advised only 15 minutes till food ended, I explained there were six of us but this wasn't a problem at all, a table was sourced straight away for us, food ordered and when it arrived was good pub food as good as some up market local pubs but a lot more reasonably priced, ordered two garlic bread side dishes expecting 2 pieces of bread but got two large pizza garlic breads which would have been at home in an Italian restaurant.Overall couldn't fault it, good pub food friendly staff, and washed down with an excellent pint of golden ale.

As it was such a lovely day yesterday, I decided to have a walk up the canal with my sidekick to get a drink and some tea at the Hopwood arms. It was just after 4 and the place was very busy. Managed to get a table with enough space for my daughters wheelchair to fit. After 2 pints, I ordered barbecue ribs and garlic mushrooms for my starter off the specials board and rump steak for my main. The starters were delicious and good large portion sizes and the rump steak was cooked perfectly. We will definitely be returning and all you dog lovers can take your dogs here, as dogs are very welcome
