About This Pub

Oh, mate, if you're after a proper pub experience in Liverpool, The Red Lion is one I'd happily recommend for a pint and a chat. It's got this fantastic, cosy feel with decorations that are just spot on – think stunning interiors that make you want to linger longer than planned. The drinks selection is spot on too, with a great range of real ales and craft beers that hit the mark every time. And the staff? They're dead helpful, always ready with a smile and a suggestion for the best spot upstairs if it's heaving downstairs. It's open well into the wee hours, which is brilliant for those spontaneous nights out. But, to be fair, I have to mention that one review talked about a nasty accident with a radiator, which sounds like a one-off but is a reminder to be mindful of the older building's quirks. Overall, it's a solid choice for a relaxed evening, as long as you're up for that mix of charm and a bit of caution – definitely worth a visit if you're in the area!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely brilliant – it's a proper cosy spot with stunning decor that makes you feel right at home, especially on a chilly evening in Liverpool.
  • They've got a cracking selection of real ales and craft beers, perfect for anyone who appreciates a good pint without the touristy vibes.
  • The staff are really helpful and friendly; they'll point you to the best spots, like the quieter upstairs area if things get busy.
  • It's open late into the night, which is ideal for a relaxed catch-up or a lively night out, with good tunes playing in the background.
Cons
  • There was a worrying incident where something fell and caused an injury, so it's worth being a bit cautious about the older fixtures in the place.
  • It can get quite busy on the ground floor, which might make it tricky to find a seat if you're popping in spontaneously.

I'd love to comment on the food and and atmosphere but I can't as I didn't eat or get to stay to enjoy the atmosphere. We visited for a birthday celebration (September 2022) whilst there, a radiator fell off the wall and crushed my toe causing me to spend the evening in Liverpool hospital. Having contacted solicitors to pursue reimbursement, the owner has "folded" the business. Today, I've been advised that due to a lack of insurance on the owners part, there is "no case to answer". Meanwhile, I have nerve damage. I have plenty of images of the lack structural fixings of stated radiator and the damage it caused. It's now due to a lack of progression with the solicitors that I'm posting this review. Would I recommend this establishment, no, if the previous owner has anything to do with it. Safety of his customers clearly isn't paramount. All of the above needs to be considered with the owners during 2022 and if the establishment has changed hands, it's clearly not applicable.

This pub is absolutely gorgeous. I’m not from Liverpool and it’s hard to stumble across anything over than a touristy Beatles themed bar, or an Irish bar. This a proper pub, with good tunes on. The decor is 10/10 so cosy especially a night time. I will definitely be coming back here. The drink selection is great, reasonably priced. Overall just a great pub, and a must if you’re in Liverpool.

Stunningly decorated pub both internally and externally. Decent selection of real ales and craft beers. Ground floor was very busy but the upper floor was quiet when we visited and was able to get a table. Worth visiting just to see the pubs interior.

An accidental find in the Ropewalks area of Liverpool as we made our way up to the city centre from behind the Baltic Triangle through the side streets. Nice place, helpful guy behind the bar downstairs who told us to go up to the other bar upstairs. Fabulous place, nice atmosphere and a good place to chat with the local people who frequent it.
