About This Pub
Ah, The Merchant – it's one of those places in Liverpool that I've heard mates rave about for its cosy atmosphere and prime spot near the city centre, where you can easily nip in for a relaxed afternoon or evening. I reckon it's a top choice if you're after a pint in a setting with high ceilings, beams, and those lovely hanging plants that make it feel like a hidden gem. The food's often a winner too; folks have sung praises for the TNT prawns and fillet beef, saying they're cooked to perfection and served up by staff who know how to make you feel welcome. But, fair warning, it's not all smooth sailing – there've been tales of bar staff playing favourites with pushy crowds, which can leave you feeling a bit miffed. And while the beer garden's a treat on a nice day, some have had rough luck with the grub, like picking up food poisoning from a pizza, so maybe stick to the safer options. The DJ can be a bit of a downer too, being curt and not budging on the playlist, which means it's not always the spot for a proper dance. All in all, it's got that classic pub charm with highs and lows, so if you're heading there, go in with an open mind and keep your expectations balanced for a good night out.
Pros and Cons
Pros

The location is spot on, right in the heart of Liverpool, making it a breeze to pop in after a wander around the city.
-
The ambiance is lovely, with high ceilings, beams, and hanging plants that give it a warm, welcoming feel.
-
Food can be a real highlight, like those TNT prawns and fillet beef – when it's good, it's spot on and delicious.
-
Some of the staff are absolute gems, friendly and professional, making you feel right at home without needing to ask for a thing.
-
There's a nice beer garden and outdoor seating, perfect for enjoying a pint on a sunny day.
Cons
-
Bar service can be a bit of a letdown, with staff sometimes favouring those who push in, which just feels unfair.
-
Food isn't always reliable; there have been reports of dodgy experiences, like food poisoning from a pizza, so it's worth being cautious.
-
The DJ might put a dampener on things, coming across as rude and sticking to music that doesn't get folks up and dancing.
-
It can be hit or miss overall, with some visits leaving you underwhelmed despite the generally upbeat reputation.

Recent Reviews
Nice place but bar staff deliberately serve people who push in first. Major ick
Attended yesterday (22nd May) and had the pepperoni pizza and have now been up all night with food poisoning. Tasted not 100% at the time but due to the good reviews thought nothing of it (until now of course). Ate nothing else all day so was DEFINITELY the pizza. Not happy and want a refund- as a doctor myself cleanliness needs to be looked at.
Good bar, DJ is rude. No music to dance to. Nobody is up dancing... when asked if could play other music to dance and sing to the DJ replied “absolutely not.”
Sums it up.
we had jazmin as our server she was so professional and friendly, we never had to ask for anything. the food was just as delicious we started with the TNT prawns and wow they were perfect and had the fillet beef which was also cooked amazingly.
Great location in the heart of the city just a short walk from Bold Street. Nice ambiance with high ceilings and lots of beams and hanging plants. Tables outside to the front and a good sized beer garden to the rear. Nice music mix playing at just the right volume for the afternoon.
