About This Pub

Ah, The Poacher's Inn – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem, tucked away in Bollington, where you can settle in for a relaxed evening. I love how it's got that lively, welcoming vibe, with folks chatting away and a real sense of community, especially during their legendary quiz nights. The drinks selection is spot on, from the ever-changing cask ales to that impressive gin shelf and a good range of wines, making it easy to find something that hits the spot. And if you're popping in with your dog, they'll be made to feel right at home with treats and water bowls at the ready. The food's another winner – home-made with local ingredients, and those Wednesday pie nights sound like a treat, with tasty options that leave you feeling satisfied. On the flip side, though, service can be a bit hit or miss; I've heard tales of waiting ages for mains, which might put a dampener on things if you're in a rush. Plus, if you're after more vegetarian choices, the menu's a tad limited these days, and there are some frustrations with how allergens are listed or that QR code not playing ball. All in all, it's a solid choice for a pint and a catch-up with mates, as long as you go in with realistic expectations – the good far outweighs the bad, but it's always nice to be prepared.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • They've got a fantastic selection of drinks, from ever-changing cask ales to a huge gin shelf and wines by the glass – perfect for exploring new favourites.
  • It's wonderfully dog-friendly, with fresh water bowls and treats on offer, so you can bring your furry friend along without a worry.
  • The home-made food using local ingredients is a real highlight, especially with deals like pie night that deliver delicious, hearty meals.
  • That secluded beer garden is a gem for soaking up the sun with a pint, adding a lovely outdoor touch to the experience.
Cons
  • Service can sometimes drag a bit, like when mains take ages to arrive, which might leave you a tad impatient.
  • Vegetarian options seem a bit limited after recent menu changes, so it might not suit everyone looking for variety.
  • There are a few niggles with the menu, such as unclear allergen info or a dodgy QR code, which could make things confusing for those with dietary needs.

Excellent value for money. Took a long time for the mains to arrive, but the food was tasty and cooked well. The menu mentions gluten free, but doesn't list any meals as such, and the QR code supplied doesn't work. However the bar staff are helpful and have the allergen guide behind the bar and in fact there are a reasonable number of choices for mum with her intolerance.

We've eaten at this pub three times previously (last time was in early Autumn 2024) after a nice local walk and we've always had great food and good, prompt service. This time, we were disappointed to see that the menu had changed, with fewer options for the 3 out of 5 of us who are vegetarian. The 2 starters that were ordered arrived in a decent timescale but there was there an excessive delay before the mains arrived - about an hour between starters and mains. There was clearly a problem in the kitchen. No tables received mains from the kitchen for ages and though the staff were full of excuses for the tables that were more vocal in their complaints, we received no explanation. When we finally asked at the bar, we were told our meals were being plated. They weren't - the barman confused us with another table. Had we known that our meals were not actually being plated at that time we would have cancelled our order and left. When we asked again, the meals (which were fine, though not as good as we've eaten there previously) were finally served. At this point, we'd been in the pub for nearly 2 hours and had 3 tired children, so there was no way we were ordering puddings! Disappointingly, there was no offer to reduce the bill and no gesture of apology. We won't be eating there again.

One of our favourite traditional pubs. Great cask ales and wide selection of all beverages. Dog friendly. Excellent pie night deal on a Wednesday. Pies were delicious (steak and kidney and a cheese and leek). Fabulous fresh cooked chips and gorgeous veg. Thanks team as always!

Warm, friendly pub. They have just launched a new food menu which is excellent. Their fixed price lunch menu is strongly recommended. Loved that the new owners came round to every table to have a brief chat and to listen to customer's reactions.
