About This Pub

Ah, The Windmill – what a gem of a pub it is, tucked away in the Cheshire countryside. I've got to say, from what folks are raving about, the food really steals the show; think hearty roasts with lashings of gravy or light bites that pack a punch, all made with fresh, seasonal ingredients from local suppliers. The atmosphere is just spot on too – imagine sinking into comfy seats with live music in the background, or enjoying a pint in that smashing beer garden on a sunny day. It's clear they're all about making everyone feel at home, whether you're popping in with the family for the kids' menu and a bit of fun in the maze, or bringing the dog along for a wander. But, let's be fair, it's not without its quirks; those closures mid-week can throw a spanner in the works if you're not planning ahead, and if you're not nearby, it might mean a bit of a drive to get there. Still, for anyone looking for a proper British pub experience with top-notch grub and a warm welcome, it's well worth seeking out – I'd definitely recommend giving it a go when you can.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – from tender roasts and tasty sandwiches to fresh vegetarian options, it's all made with local produce and served with real care.
  • The atmosphere is so welcoming and relaxed, with live music adding a lovely touch, making it a perfect spot for a chilled evening or a sunny afternoon in the beer garden.
  • They've got a brilliant selection of local beers on tap, which is always a treat for anyone who appreciates a good pint.
  • It's super family-friendly with a kids' menu and even a maze to keep little ones entertained, and they're dog-friendly too, so you can bring your furry mate along.
  • The location is just gorgeous, tucked away near the Macclesfield Canal and the Peak District, ideal for a walk followed by a pint.
Cons
  • It's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays (except for Bank Holidays), which can be a bit of a nuisance if you're planning a mid-week outing.
  • Being in a rural spot, it might feel a tad out of the way if you're not local, so getting there could take some effort.

Visited The Windmill Pub near Macclesfield Canal last Saturday evening with my granddad – his very first time experiencing a traditional British pub, and I couldn't have picked a better place. The atmosphere was welcoming and relaxed. We were lucky to enjoy some great live music that added to the charm of the evening. The soup was delicious and comforting, and the pint of beer hit just the right note. It was a lovely experience overall – simple, authentic, and memorable. Would definitely recommend it for anyone looking to enjoy a true local pub vibe.

Caught a beautiful sunny day at lunch on a Sunday and had a super experience. The light bite sandwiches were superb with great flavour and sauces. Just the right size too and a cut (or two) above the norm I'd say. There were the right number of people about so a relaxed atmosphere but still with perfect service. From the wife choice of drinks, my XPA beer finished off a great lunchtime treat. Not the cheapest but you can tell the difference at every level.

Amazing pub, great outdoor beer garden. It even has a maze for kids. Great beer menu, with lots of local beers on tap/keg. Didn't eat inside, but food looked amazing. Outside menu was great, and kids menu had loads of options. Sat inside on some comfy couches once the weather turned. Great staff, who were very accommodating!

Top roast dinner. Beef was tender and lots of gravy. Desert options also really nice.

It’s the highlight along the Middlewood Way. The vegetarian pie and fish-n-chips are carefully prepared with excellent sauces and side vegetables, and most importantly, served on a heated plate. I can’t drink as we drove, otherwise it would be a perfect afternoon with spring sunlight spread around the cozy pub after a nice walk along the country side. We loved to revisit it again.
