About This Pub
Ah, The Cotton Tree – it's one of those pubs that really sticks in your mind, isn't it? From what I've gathered chatting about it, it's a proper gem for ale enthusiasts, with a superb range of cask beers and ciders that folks rave about, and that beer garden adds a nice touch for when the weather's on your side. The traditional setup, free from all the noise and distractions, makes it ideal for a good natter with mates or even striking up a conversation with the locals, who sound like a friendly bunch most of the time. But let's be honest, it's not perfect – the food's a bit basic, just pies and crisps, so you might want to grab a bite elsewhere before heading in. I've heard a few tales of it feeling a bit cramped or even musty inside, and there was that one instance where the service wasn't up to scratch, which is a pity because it could sour an otherwise great visit. Still, with such high praise overall, I'd say it's worth popping by if you're in the area and fancy a no-fuss pint – just go in with an open mind and you'll likely have a top time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The selection of real ales and ciders is absolutely brilliant – it's a real treat for anyone who loves a proper pint, with options like Bass bitter and even cider tapas boards to try.
-
The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with friendly locals and a traditional vibe that makes you feel right at home, especially in the evenings when it's buzzing.
-
That beer garden out back is a lovely spot, clearly a labour of love, perfect for a relaxing drink on a sunny day.
-
It's got that authentic, old-school charm with no blaring music or slot machines, which is a breath of fresh air if you're after a good chat and a timeless pub experience.
-
The staff are generally spot-on, creating a hospitable environment that keeps folks coming back for more.
Cons
-
Food options are pretty limited, just things like cold pies and crisps, so if you're hoping for a proper meal, you might end up a bit disappointed.
-
The indoor space can feel a tad small and sometimes a bit smelly, which might put some off, especially on busier nights.
-
There have been a few mentions of staff being a bit rude or standoffish on occasion, which is a shame as it doesn't happen everywhere else.
-
It's cash preferred, which can be a hassle if you're out and about with just your card, and the place can get quite crowded given its size.
-
It has a quirky, unusual feel that might not suit everyone – some find it a bit weird or not quite their cup of tea.

Exceptionally friendly here. A highlight was the beer garden which is obviously a labour of love.
Superb traditional pub with a good range of cask beers and ciders. Local Cider Pub of the Year.
Railway memorabilia and a friendly locals atmosphere.
Love the Cotton Tree, Always busy, with an array of beers and whisky. It has a timeless atmosphere. I think cash is preferable here but they do accept cards.
Unusual, and very smelly indoors. Also the barmaid (or higher up) was quite rude, and standoffish, of which I’m not used to, and didn’t happen with anyone else out of the eight pubs that I visited, quite the opposite actually. Weird place. Maybe I caught a bad day or something
Cosy pub serving a range of ale and ciders (including bass bitter) cash preferred. Interesting chatty locals. Recommended 🍻
