About This Pub
Ah, The Phoenix Inn – it's one of those hidden gems in York that just feels like a proper old-school pub, you know? I've heard from folks who've been there that the real ales are a real highlight, always well-kept and with plenty of variety to suit whatever you're in the mood for. The atmosphere is spot on too; imagine settling in by a crackling log fire on a chilly evening or soaking up the sun in that lovely beer garden overlooking the city walls – it's all about that peaceful, no-fuss escape from the hustle. The team behind the bar are dead friendly, always up for a chat and making sure everything runs smoothly. On the flip side, it's a shame they only do bar snacks rather than full meals, so if you're peckish for something more substantial, you might have to plan ahead. And with hours kicking off in the afternoon, it's not ideal for those early-day outings. All in all, it's a fantastic spot for a relaxed pint and good company, but it's worth knowing what you're getting into for the full experience.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The real ales are absolutely spot-on, with a fantastic rotating selection that caters to all tastes and keeps things fresh and exciting.
-
It's got such a warm, traditional atmosphere – think cosy log fire in winter and a sunny beer garden in summer, perfect for unwinding without any distractions like TVs or machines.
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
-
Tucked away near the historic city walls, it's in a brilliant location that's easy to stumble upon and adds to the charm of the place.
-
It's a lively spot for a pre-event drink or just catching up with friends, with great bar snacks to keep things simple and enjoyable.
Cons
-
It doesn't serve full meals, just bar snacks, so if you're after a proper sit-down dinner, you might need to head elsewhere.
-
The opening hours start from the afternoon most days, which could be a bit limiting if you're an early riser looking for a morning pint.
-
Being a bit hidden away, it might take a moment to find, and it can get quiet at times, which isn't everyone's cup of tea if you prefer a buzzing crowd.

Lovely pub. Public bar in front dining in back. Had a pint of old peculiar and it was just as amazing as the staff promised our would be. Cozy atmosphere and colorful folks.
So many classic pubs in York, this is up there amongst the best with its incredible location adjacent to the city walls. An ever changing choice of well kept, cask ales - there should be something to cover all tastes.
A fantastic little pub with an amazing atmosphere. The pub does not serve meals, but has a great selection of great bar snacks. This is a lively pub and a great spot to grab a drink before attending an event at the Barbican.
A little gem of a pub that's a bit hidden but in such a great location just inside the old walls mixing well into the neighborhood. Quiet when I visited with a few couples and some friends having a pint after work. A lovely little fireplace, friendly barkeeper, and some good cask ales. The small back patio looks great for the warmer months. This place clearly has some history and stories and next time I'm in York I'll certainly stop by again.
I'm in this pub way too often but its hard to stay away! The live music is wonderful and the selection of drinks unrivalled. The different cask rotations keep it interesting and each and every member of staff are attentive and great to be around. I would recommend this pub to anyone.
