About This Pub
Ah, The Postern Gate – it's one of those reliable Wetherspoons spots that you can always count on for a good time without spending a fortune. I love how affordable everything is; you can grab a pint or a meal and still have change left in your pocket, which makes it ideal for a casual catch-up with mates. The staff are an absolute gem, always cheerful and on hand to sort you out quickly, and the place itself has this nice, modern feel with comfy seating and a clean environment that just puts you at ease. Plus, sitting by the canal on a sunny day is just the ticket for a relaxed drink – it's got that extra touch of magic with its location near York's attractions. On the flip side, though, they do go a bit heavy on the ice in the soft drinks, which can water things down more than you'd like. And watch out on the weekends; it turns into a proper hive of activity, with queues and some menu items vanishing faster than you can say 'another round,' which might spoil the fun if you're after something specific. The food's generally alright, but I've heard a few grumbles about the steak being tough to chew or breakfasts not quite hitting the mark in terms of quality. All in all, it's a cracking choice for a laid-back evening or a quick stop-off, as long as you go in with realistic expectations and maybe avoid the peak times if you're after a quieter pint.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The beer is super affordable, making it a brilliant spot for a cheeky pint without breaking the bank.
-
Service is spot on – the staff are really friendly and helpful, always ready with a smile and quick assistance.
-
It's got a lovely atmosphere, feeling modern, clean, and comfortable inside, with plenty of seating to relax in.
-
Prime location right by the canal, perfect for enjoying a drink outdoors when the sun's out – adds a real charm to the experience.
-
A lively vibe that's great for casual meet-ups, with a classic Wetherspoons feel that never disappoints for food and drinks.
Cons
-
They tend to overdo it with the ice in soft drinks – just a couple of cubes would do the trick, really.
-
Some menu items can be out of stock, especially on busy Saturdays, which might leave you wanting what you came for.
-
It gets absolutely packed on Friday and Saturday nights, so you might end up waiting or feeling a bit squashed.
-
A few food items, like the steak, can be a bit chewy, and the breakfasts might come across as a tad on the cheap side quality-wise.

Super cheap beer, good service nice atmosphere. Too much ice in the soft drinks. 2 cubes is plenty in a half lemonade
Breakfasts looked pretty cheap quality though 😀
This is a nice Wetherspoons, it’s modern inside and comfortable and clean, the staff are very friendly and helpful, they have a tables outside by the canal this is definitely a nice place to sit when the sun is out.
A classic Wetherspoons pub with a large amount of seating. This can be a very lively place for food and drinks, unfortunately on a Saturday afternoon they had a large amount of options out of stock on the menu.
Such a great location, we came to visit Cliffords Tower and stopped in Wether spoon for something to eat. Like Wetherspoon it did not disappoint.
The staff are really friendly and the service was excellent. Plus you can sit right by the river to have a drink, note you can only have drinks near the river and it's bar service only for the river seats too.
The rest is normal order at your table service.
Food is nice, got that traditional whetherspoons vibe going for it. Gets extremely busy on a Friday and Saturday night so just be mindful when choosing this place. Service has been quite fast for me, found the steak hard to eat as it was quite chewy, but all the other food I've had has been great.
