About This Pub
Oh, The Red Lion in York is one of those pubs that really captures the essence of a classic British spot – you walk in and instantly feel that cosy, timeless charm with its old wooden beams and flickering fireplaces. It's got this laidback atmosphere that's perfect for catching up with mates over a pint of local craft beer or joining in on a quiz night; the staff are absolute gems, always cheerful and on hand to sort you out. The outdoor area is a real bonus on sunnier days, and it's brilliant that dogs are welcome too. That said, I've got to be straight with you – the food's a mixed bag these days. With the new chef and menu shake-up, some folks have found it underwhelming, like the photos making it look better than it is, or dishes not quite hitting the spot. If you're popping in for drinks and the vibe, you'll likely have a cracking time, but you might want to give the grub a miss or check what's on offer first. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed evening, as long as you keep your expectations in check for the eats.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The historic atmosphere is just brilliant, with creaky floors, low timbered ceilings, and cosy coal fireplaces that make you feel right at home.
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, always up for a chat and making sure everything runs smoothly.
-
They've got a cracking selection of local craft beers alongside the usual favourites, perfect for a relaxing pint.
-
The outdoor seating area is lovely, especially on a nice day, and it's great that it's dog-friendly so you can bring your four-legged mate along.
-
It's smack in the centre of York, making it an ideal spot to unwind after a day of exploring the city.
Cons
-
The food can be a bit inconsistent, especially since the menu changed with the new chef – some dishes just don't live up to expectations.
-
Photos online might be outdated, leading to disappointments when what arrives doesn't match what you were hoping for.
-
There have been a few grumbles about wait times or the overall quality of the meals, so it might not be the best choice if you're after a top-notch bite.

We have visited this pub numerous times in the last 7 years and enjoyed battered opinion rings and sweet potatoe fries, we visited approx a month ago to be informed they now have a new chef and the menu has changed, our usual are no longer on the menu!! We have visited again today in the hope that our favs have been added to the menu. No luck so we left and will not visit again. We loved your pub previously but no more!!!!
Fantastic. The vibe is old wood, creaky floors, low timbered ceilings and coal fireplaces. Lots of nice outdoor seating too. A selection of local craft beers and also standard bottled choices. Staff was very friendly and the food service was fast. Dog friendly, too. The food was solid, tasty pub fare, no complaints whatsoever.
Lovely historic pub, good atmosphere and beer, lovely staff. Made several visits on our stay in the city. Didn't have any food but didn't hear of any complaints, large outdoor area and central to town amenities etc
The Red Lion is a great British pub to chitchat, relax, drink and participate in their quiz. It is cozy, warm, inviting and laidback. The workers are also just as nice and helpful. However, do not come here for their food. The photos look nice, but are old and the staff making it is new. Our food tasted at best decent, but plating a look is the level of a child. Fortunately the food wasn’t that expensive otherwise I’d be upset due to it not being really worth it.
5 star 🌟 Food was absolutely delicious, Staff were super friendly and helpful Chef even came out to ask if food was OK which it was lovely. Will definitely be coming back 😁
