About This Pub

Oh, let me tell you about the Chopping Block at Walmgate Ale House – it's one of those places in York that just hits the spot for a good evening out. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food is truly something special; we're talking contemporary French classics with a Yorkshire twist, like pan-seared scallops or a hearty Sunday roast, all served up at prices that won't leave you shocked when the bill arrives. The wine list is impressive too, and they've got a solid range of local ales downstairs in the pub, which makes it versatile whether you're popping in for a quick drink or settling in for a full meal. The staff seem genuinely friendly and attentive, adding to that relaxed, informal charm in this old 17th-century building that's got plenty of history and even a few ghost stories to boot. But, and I say this with a fair bit of honesty, it's not without its drawbacks – you'll find it's shut on Mondays and Tuesdays, which might throw a spanner in the works for spontaneous plans, and the bar area's a bit tight, so if you're with a bigger crowd or have accessibility needs, you might need to stick to the ground floor. Overall, though, it's a welcoming spot that does a cracking job of mixing high-quality grub with a down-to-earth pub feel, making it well worth a visit if you're in the area and fancy something a cut above the ordinary.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – think delicious French dishes made with top-notch Yorkshire ingredients, perfect for a treat without breaking the bank.
  • They've got a cracking selection of wines and local brews, making it a brilliant spot for a relaxed pint or a proper meal.
  • The service is warm and welcoming, with staff who know their stuff and make you feel right at home in that historic 17th-century building.
  • It's a great choice for special occasions, like anniversaries, with private rooms available and a cosy atmosphere that's full of character.
Cons
  • It's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, which can be a bit of a nuisance if you're planning a mid-week outing.
  • Space is limited in the bar area, so if you're after a table for a larger group or fancy bringing a dog, you might be stuck with bar service only.
  • While the ground floor has disabled access, the upstairs restaurant might not suit everyone, and it can get busy, making it feel a tad cramped at times.

My husband and I visited the Chopping Block for our wedding anniversary having never been before (but had heard good things) and we were so happy with the evening. The food was sublime, portion size perfect, and so reasonably priced. Impressive wine list (again, reasonably priced for the standard) and the staff were incredibly friendly. Great plus that the building is a fabulous historical tardis! Really enjoyed ourselves and will definitely be back.

Went for Sunday lunch. Started with a delicious special of asparagus risotto, then had a mixed beef and pork roast dinner. Lovely tender meat with great crackling and Yorkshire pudding and home made gravy. Up until now would have said that Roast, on borough market was the best roast dinner out but this topped it! Great service too.

Absolutely delicious Food and Wine. We had an evening meal here and we were very impressed with the quality and taste of all the dishes. We had Pan Seared Scallops and Boudin Noir for starters, Slow Cooked Yorkshire Lamb Shoulder and Longhorn Rump Steak for mains with a Sticky Toffee Pudding and whisky for dessert.. can't recommend it enough. Service was also very polite and efficient, Thanks :-)

First came here as a Christmas work team outing in December and loved the food. Took my wife back there for our anniversary and we both loved it. Both times being mid week it wasn't overly busy, the food was great and the service really good.

Found this little gem of a place by default, a couple leaving said it was amazing food so we decided to nip in, and so very glad we did. We only had bar snacks (Yorkshire pudding with pulled beef and dirty fries). Both absolutely delicious, very good cask ales and nice selection of gins too, in a chilled, non pretentious atmosphere with friendly staff! We will be back!
