About This Pub
Oh, what a treat The Old Windmill is – it's one of those pubs that just wraps you up in its warm, historic embrace from the moment you step inside, with its cosy wood fires and traditional beams making it feel like a step back in time. I've heard from mates that the food is spot on, with fresh ingredients turned into hearty British classics and a dash of international flair, and it's reassuring to know they've got those gluten-free choices sorted for everyone. The staff are an absolute delight, always cheerful and on hand to make your visit smooth, whether you're there for a quick pint of local ale or a full meal in the garden. That said, it's not all perfect; the prices can sting a bit, and while they dealt with a food mishap gracefully, it's something to keep in mind if you're planning a trip. All in all, if you're a fan of pubs with character and you're up for a bit of countryside relaxation, this one's well worth a visit – just go with an open mind and you'll likely have a cracking time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is absolutely charming, with those classic wood fires, flagstone floors, and oak beams that make you feel right at home in a proper English country pub.
-
The staff are wonderfully friendly and helpful, always ready with a smile and quick to sort out any little issues that might crop up.
-
They serve up fresh, delicious food with a mix of classic British dishes and some exciting global flavours, and it's great to see plenty of gluten-free options available.
-
It's dog-friendly, which is brilliant if you're out for a walk and fancy popping in for a pint or a meal.
-
There's a lovely garden and outdoor seating area, perfect for enjoying a drink on a sunny day, and they've got a solid selection of local cask ales to choose from.
Cons
-
The food can be on the pricey side, so it might not be the best spot if you're watching your wallet.
-
There have been occasional slip-ups with food quality, like that incident with insects in the salad, which is a bit off-putting even if the team handled it well.

I visited here for lunch. It's a lovely pub and setting. The food is on the more expensive side of things. The service was friendly and helpful. We had some insects in our salad, staff checked with the kitchen who reassured us the salad was treated but staff offered our lunch to us as an apology. It can happen and we were fine afterwards. The atmosphere is pleasant. Access is available for everyone. Overall it was ok
Lunch at The Old Windmill in South Hanningfield felt like a little countryside holiday without the hassle of passport control. We parked up for a casual lunch and ended up staying far longer than planned, thanks to the charming garden and the laid-back vibe under a billowing safari-style tent. It was the sort of spot where time just floats by, perhaps helped along by a couple of chilled fruit ciders (pineapple and raspberry, if you’re curious). Followed by a glass of Prosecco.
For mains, we went classic-with-a-twist: a proper steak sandwich with thick-cut chips (no skimping here) and a hot duck wrap crispy, rich, and generously packed also served with golden chips that were just the right side of indulgent. I had grand intentions of snapping a photo for posterity, but the food arrived smelling so good we dove straight in. Cabin crew instincts kicked in: tray down, forks up!
The grand finale? A chocolate orange tart paired with blood orange ice cream, zesty, rich, and beautifully balanced. It felt like a proper pudding. Not too sweet, not too heavy just right.
The service was excellent, friendly, attentive but never overbearing. It was the kind of traditional British hospitality I really appreciate: warm, efficient, and down to earth.
All in all, The Old Windmill delivered a perfect pub lunch with a hint of adventure (safari tent and all). I’ll be back next time with my phone ready, but no promises I won’t forget again if the food’s that good.
A lovely pub with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The staff are friendly, and the 18th-century beams add plenty of character. Great selection of local ales on tap and plenty of parking. A fantastic spot to visit!
Only came across this little gem a couple months ago. Been a few times now. Staff are wonderful. Food is another level. Delicious, fresh and tasty. Dog friendly. Highly recommend. And if all you want is a drink by the log burner, then this is just for you.
A beautiful pub with log burner and comfortable chairs. I had fish and chips which was amazing and tasted fresh. Majority of meals are gluten free. Plenty of parking. Staff were lovely. Looking forward to to going again. I'd say fair pricing.
