About This Pub
Ah, the Downham Arms in Wickford – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem, you know? From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the staff are absolute stars; they're chatty, smiley, and make you feel like you're part of the furniture right from the off. The food's a winner too – I'm talking hearty, flame-grilled options that hit the spot, with rave reviews for classics like mac n cheese and fish and chips, plus desserts that sound utterly irresistible. It's brilliant for families or if you're popping in with the dog, and they've got all the sports action sorted, whether it's the Women's Euros or rugby tours, which makes it a top pick for a lively afternoon. On the flip side, though, I've heard a few tales of parking fines catching folks out, which is a bit of a shame and could sour an otherwise lovely visit. And while the prices are generally spot on, there might be the occasional slip-up with portions or service that leaves you wanting a tad more. All in all, it's a solid choice for a casual get-together – just plan ahead and you'll likely have a cracking time!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, always chatting and smiling, which makes you feel right at home.
-
The food is a real highlight – think delicious flame-grilled dishes like top-notch mac n cheese, fish and chips, and that amazing chocolate fudge cake that's worth every bite.
-
It's super family-friendly and even dog-friendly, perfect for bringing the whole gang along without any fuss.
-
A great spot for watching live sports, with fixtures for things like the Women's Euros and rugby tours, plus amenities like Sky Sports and WiFi to keep everyone entertained.
-
Overall, it's clean, well-maintained, and offers good value for money, making it an affordable choice for a casual outing.
Cons
-
There have been some grumbles about parking fines in the car park, which can really put a dampener on your visit if you're not careful.
-
Portion sizes can sometimes disappoint, like paying a bit extra for chips that don't quite live up to expectations.
-
While most experiences are positive, the odd review mentions service or food hiccups, so it might not be flawless every time.

Love this pub!
Mac n cheese is the best and the best chocolate fudge cake!
A really friendly, welcoming pub
All staff always chatty and smiley.
Highly recommend.
So today I went to the downham arms with my partner for some lunch and a cheeky desert and I must say the food was 10/10 as always, I ordered the fish and chips as this morning when I woke up that all I could think about and the downham did not disappoint! Fast service, amazing customer service and the food was delicious! Thank you monta and Lewis for a lovely meal and thank you Julie and Steven for your brilliant service and the good giggle! Can’t wait for my next visit
Visited last Friday for lunch and was so impressed. We received a warm welcome when we arrived and was served our food quickly. The food was soooo tasty and great value for money. Our waitress Julie was amazing, so friendly, helpful and very attentive. We will definitely be visiting again :)
Staff are really friendly and always make our daughter smile. The food is decent for a pub and it’s clean and well looked after. I would recommend it to anyone, families and groups of friends.
Unfortunately the food has let itself down. Paid £2.60 for 11 chips. They were not great either. Also £9 for a pint of Stella and a coke.
I know it’s tough for pubs but that’s a joke.
Don't bother. Despite having lunch and drinks in this pub I have just had to pay a £100 parking fine, just for using the car park whilst having our lunch.
The pub are clearly happy to allow a parking company to fleece their customers and have shown zero interest in helping resolve this.
The sign as you drive in clearly states "PUB GUESTS ONLY" which is misleading as a week later I received the parking fine. Yes in small print it says "terms and conditions apply" but this is easily missed when driving into the car park. As a pub guest one would presume as a paying customer you are exempt.
The food was average and the pub is woefully understaffed.
Joke - go elsewhere
