About This Pub

Ah, The Old White Bear – it's one of those timeless London pubs that's been a staple in Hampstead since 1704, tucked away near the Heath, making it an ideal spot for a lazy Sunday or a cheeky midweek pint. From what I've gathered from folks who've been, the staff are an absolute delight, always up for a chat and making sure everything runs smoothly, which really adds to the cosy feel. The drinks selection is spot on too, with well-kept ales and cracking cocktails that pair brilliantly with their hearty menu, especially those Sunday roasts that sound like a proper treat when they're on form. And let's not forget the fun extras, like the monthly comedy nights upstairs – perfect for a night of laughs with a drink in hand. On the flip side, it's not all roses; a couple of mates mentioned that portions can be a bit skimpy, and the food doesn't always hit the mark, with some roasts turning out chewy or puddings that feel overpriced for what you get. Service can lag a touch when it's heaving, but overall, it's a solid choice if you're in the area – just go in with realistic expectations and you'll likely have a grand time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in
  • They've got a cracking selection of craft beers, ales, and cocktails, with something to suit every taste
  • The Sunday roasts and hearty dishes like pies are proper comforting – think buttery mash and well-cooked veg that hit the spot
  • It's got a lovely atmosphere with roaring fires in winter and sunny outdoor spots in summer, plus fun events like monthly comedy nights for a good laugh
  • As a historic spot in Hampstead since 1704, it's perfect for special occasions or just a relaxed catch-up with mates
Cons
  • Portions can be on the small side for some dishes, like the roast or puddings, which might leave you feeling a bit short-changed
  • Food quality isn't always consistent – a few have mentioned chewy meat in the roasts or underwhelming puddings that don't quite live up to the hype
  • Service can be hit or miss; it's generally fine but sometimes a tad slow, especially when it's busy
  • Prices are moderate, but for the location in Hampstead, some might find it a bit steep if the food doesn't fully deliver

My husband and I got married down the road at Burgh House and then hired the private upstairs space of The Old White Bear for drinks and food afterwards. The whole evening was absolutely perfect. Joanna (the manager) kept in touch with us beforehand and helped us plan every detail. She kindly adapted the menu and drinks options for us and no request seemed too much. The food was delicious and there was so much of it! The staff were so friendly and helpful. Everything was seamless. If you’re thinking of having an event for around 50 people, look no further. You won’t find better than here! Thanks again Joanna, Phoebe and team!

Went to The Old White Bear for a Sunday roast—we booked ahead and both went for the chicken. Portions were generous, and the food was good—the veg was especially tasty—but it didn’t quite make the list of top roasts we’ve had in London. Still very enjoyable, just not standout. Service was a little slow, even with few other tables around, but the staff were friendly and welcoming. The pub itself is a charming, proper boozer with a great drinks selection at reasonable prices. The front tables get the afternoon sun, making it a perfect spot for a relaxed drink. We’d definitely go back for the atmosphere and a pint, more so than the food. A solid stop to include on a Hampstead pub crawl!

Super lovely and friendly staff. Great selection of food and drinks. Classic pub in the heart of Hampstead. Comedy night updates. Enough said!

Food was just divine! The pie was stuffed full of quality ingredients and the mash was buttery and fluffy. Cabbage was also well cooked and it all came together to have a classic hearty dish at a decent price for the location. Staff were friendly and attentive and the inside of the pub is beautiful.

The service and atmosphere were decent but the roast dinner and sticky toffee pudding was very poor. The roast dinner was very small and the beef was chewy. The sticky toffee pudding was also the tiniest portion for £8.50 and came with barely any sauce, we did ask for more sauce and they provided it.
