About This Pub
Ah, The Wells Tavern – it's one of those places that just feels like a proper Hampstead hideaway, you know? From what I've gathered chatting about it, the food really steals the show; they've got these inventive menus that mix classic pub grub with seasonal twists, and reviews rave about things like the blue cheese burger or a perfectly cooked steak – it's all done with that homely touch that makes you feel right at home. The atmosphere is another winner, with cosy sofas, a roaring fireplace, and even space for the dogs, ideal for a lazy Sunday or a catch-up with friends. Plus, the drinks are spot on, from a vast selection of beers to creative cocktails that change weekly, and they've got wines that won't break the bank. But, to keep it real, it's not all perfect – some have had off days with service feeling a tad rushed or staff seeming a bit green, and prices can be higher than expected compared to what's online, which might sting a little. Still, with a solid 4.4 rating from the crowd, it's clear this place gets more right than wrong, so if you're popping by, I'd say go for it and maybe aim for a quieter time to avoid any hitches. All in all, it's a solid choice for anyone after a good pub experience in London.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely spot on – think innovative yet comforting dishes like tender steaks, delicious burgers, and seasonal specials that make every meal feel special.
-
It's got that cosy, welcoming atmosphere with fireplaces, board games, and even dog bowls, making it perfect for a relaxed catch-up with mates or a family outing.
-
The drink selection is brilliant, offering a wide range of beers, weekly cocktail specials, and a thoughtful wine list that's all about great value without skimping on quality.
-
Service can be top-notch when it's on form, with friendly staff who go the extra mile, like offering ale samples to help you pick the perfect pint.
Cons
-
Service isn't always reliable; some folks have mentioned it feeling a bit rushed or inexperienced, which can put a damper on the experience.
-
Prices might catch you off guard – a few have noted that the food costs more than what's listed online, so it's worth double-checking before you go.
-
Occasionally, the food quality dips, like with floury mash in one case, which isn't ideal when you're expecting pub classics done right.

Looks very quaint from outside, good energy from people inside. Service was lacking all seemed very rushed and inexperienced, had to ask 3 times for a menu. Food was a lot more expensive than the sample menu listed online. I got the Cumberland sausages W/ Mash and Gravy. The mash was floury instead of being light and creamy. Would be good for a pint outside but don’t suggest getting food.
Solid neighborhood pub with excellent food. Blue cheese burger was delicious. Also recommend the goat cheese salad and potato roti.
I called in by chance when walking around Highgate and Hampstead on a beautiful Spring day. I just wanted a pint and something light to eat.
I found the staff to be welcoming, visible and active. I was offered a sample of ale before choosing a different variety through personal taste. My food choice was deliciously fresh wholemeal seeded bread with dipping oils, absolutely perfect for what I wanted. The pint of lager and the bread/oil came to just over ten pounds which was reasonable for this part of the world.
I rather liked the atmosphere of the place generally, pleasant clientele and if I had had the time I would have stayed the whole afternoon because it felt that comfortable.
Amazing Gastropub for Lunch Diner and special occasions, especially during hot British summer. Went there last August for friends Brithday dinner and it was amazing for a pub.
The Steak was very tender and good portion size, the sause was a bit to strong for me but other wise very good.
Went for the apple crumble for desert which I was not a fan off as it was very tart but the wine and cocktails made of for it, very good quality (coming for a bartender) I got their Amerreto Sour (my favourite) and it was smooth and creamy.
Tucked away in the heart of Hampstead, North London, this place is an absolute hidden gem that you won’t want to miss! With incredible food, impeccable service, and an atmosphere that strikes the perfect balance between cozy and vibrant, it’s a must-visit for anyone exploring the area. Located just a short stroll up Flask Walk towards the stunning Hampstead Heath, it’s easy to find, but hard to leave once you’re there. I highly recommend making a booking, especially on weekends when it gets super busy, though if you’re feeling lucky, you can always try your chances. And did I mention it’s dog-friendly? Yes, bring your furry friend along to enjoy this unique spot with you! Whether you’re a local or a tourist, this place will definitely be one of the highlights of your visit!
