About This Pub
Ah, The Old Star – it's one of those classic London pubs that you stumble upon near St James's Park, full of character from its 1836 origins, and it's got that mix of old-school charm with a modern twist in its stylish interior. I have to say, it's brilliant for catching live action like the Women's Euros on the telly, and if you're after a solid meal, the fish and chips or steak come highly recommended by a few who've raved about them. The lunchtime deals are a nice touch, making it feel accessible even in pricey Westminster, and little perks like being dog-friendly or having WiFi make it a welcoming place for a relaxed afternoon. On the flip side, though, it's not all roses; I've heard some horror stories about the Sunday roast being utterly inedible, with chewy meat and bland sides that left a bad taste, quite literally. Then there's the service – while some staff are absolute gems, others can be a bit off-putting, with reports of rudeness or uneven treatment that might put a damper on things. All in all, if you're heading there, I'd suggest going for the strengths like the atmosphere and sports screenings, but keep your expectations in check for the food and service to avoid any surprises. It's a solid choice for a casual meet-up, but maybe not your go-to for a special occasion.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff can be really welcoming and friendly, especially that Italian manager who serves with a smile and adds a bit of cheer to your visit.
-
They've got some cracking food options, like the fish and chips or that amazing steak – perfect for a hearty meal with a pint.
-
Prices for lunch deals are quite reasonable, including a beer or wine for just a couple of quid extra, which feels like good value in central London.
-
It's got a lovely, relaxing atmosphere in a historic spot, with plenty of seating upstairs and downstairs for a cosy catch-up.
-
They're big on live sports, showing events like the Women's Euros, and offer handy facilities like being dog-friendly and having WiFi.
Cons
-
Some meals can be a real letdown, like the Sunday roast that's been called the worst ever – tough meat and disappointing veg.
-
Service isn't always spot on; there are tales of unfriendly waiters or bar staff with a bit of an attitude, which can spoil the mood.
-
Drinks might come in tiny portions for the price, such as a small glass of prosecco that's shockingly dear at nearly £8.
-
Food and drinks can feel overpriced overall, especially when the quality doesn't live up to expectations.
-
Experiences seem to vary, with some folks noting inconsistent treatment, which might make you think twice about popping in.

A very friendly Italian manager who served our meals with a smile & a laugh. The lunchtime meals were very reasonable which included a beer or wine for only €2 extra. A quaint English pub with for a relaxing atmosphere with plenty of seating upstairs & downstairs.
Enjoyed the fish and chips here. One of the better ones I’ve had in the area. Definitely order the curry sauce. Wicked with fries! My wife enjoyed the BLT. We saw others who had ordered wings, which also looked good. The waiter we had asked about the wings said he wouldn’t recommend them. I read complaints about the wait. We didn’t experience that as we had gone before the rush.
The worst sunday roast, ever. The meat couldn’t be chewed at all costs. The potatoes: horrendous. The carrots were ok, but you couldn’t wrong boiled carrots now, could you? The waiter highly unfriendly.
It was super gross food, but on the other side it was extra expensive. Avoid at all costs.
The Italian bartender has such a bad attitude (if you are male). And they serve the smallest glass of prosecco in town. I shared a photo of the glass they serve me for nearly £8. The guy is more charming with Ladies. Maybe they get a proper glass of prosecco as well
One of my most favourite pubs in central London. The steak is amazing and beer as well! Staffs are quite friendly!
