About This Pub

Ah, The Old Manor – it's one of those pubs that really captures the heart of British tradition, with its rustic beams and welcoming vibe in the middle of Potters Bar. I have to say, the atmosphere is spot on; it's perfect for catching up with mates over a well-poured pint or enjoying a classic cocktail, and they've got a great lineup of events for everything from birthdays to weddings. The staff are an absolute treat, always cheerful and accommodating, which makes it feel like a proper community hub. On the food front, they've got some cracking British dishes with fresh ingredients, and the Sunday roasts sound like they'd hit the spot after a long walk. But, let's be honest, it's not all roses – a few folks have mentioned the meals can be a bit underwhelming, like bland burgers or pricey calamari that doesn't quite deliver, and you might end up waiting a while if you're in a big group. Still, with that solid 4.2 rating, it's worth giving it a go for a relaxed evening; just keep your expectations in check and maybe stick to the drinks if you're after something foolproof. All in all, it's a gem with a few rough edges, but that's what makes these places feel real.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely charming – it's a historic, rustic spot with beautiful beams and a cosy feel that makes you want to linger over a pint.
  • The staff are friendly and welcoming, always on hand to make your visit enjoyable, especially if you're there for events or with the family.
  • It's in a handy location with free parking and just a short walk from the station, making it easy to pop in after a day out.
  • They serve up some proper British pub classics using fresh, seasonal ingredients, and the Sunday roasts come highly recommended.
  • With an overall rating of 4.2, it's clear plenty of folks appreciate the vibe and the solid selection of ales, beers, wines, and cocktails.
Cons
  • The food can be a bit hit or miss – some dishes like burgers or calamari have been described as bland or overpriced for what you get.
  • There might be longer waits between courses, particularly if you're with a larger group, which can put a dampener on things.
  • While the pricing is moderate, a few have mentioned it doesn't always match up to the quality, leaving you feeling a tad short-changed.
  • Based on recent feedback, it's not consistently top-notch, with some meals not living up to the lovely setting.

Booked a large table months in advance due to it being the meal the night before our wedding. Was sat on a nice table upstairs so started out great, drinks came quickly. Was quite a long wait between starters and mains but we completely understood as it was a larger table. After the mains is where it went down the pan. Took absolutely ages between mains and desserts, was told this was due to their only being one chef in the kitchen at that point. Which no problem we understand they only have one pair of hands. But we couldn’t quite understand why the staffing was so low as they’d known about this booking for months and we had preordered the dishes. Sent out half the desserts and not the rest. Didn’t realise they hadn’t sent the rest until we asked after giving them lots of time. Forgot about some completely. Both me and my husband had to keep going downstairs to ask them about what was happening throughout the evening. Was a far from relaxing meal for us when it should have been straight forward. Would recommend the food it’s great, just if you are a bigger table would steer clear as the service was mostly awful. Would imagine if you go as smaller table the service might be a lot better!

Had the burgers (one veggie one normal) and they were very bland. The calamari was also very overpriced, paid £9 and got about 6 small pieces of calamari (not an exaggeration). The building is beautiful and the staff were lovely just a shame the food didn’t meet the same standard. I did however like that there was nearly equal options for veggie food as there was normal meals!

As a non Brit I can appreciate from afar such remarkable history. The locals are great and the atmosphere truely worth visiting. I would travel again to Potters Bar merely to enjoy such a piece of history. I only marked 4 for food as did not over indulge so limited experience.

Very cosy and friendly pub, very rustic and welcoming - was a birthday get together with family and we had under 10s. We were accommodated with no fuss as we decided to seat in different place from the dinning area, food was delicious and the service was friendly. Definately will return. Thank you for a lovely afternoon

Great food and service was first rate. The place is awesome being a 500 year old timbered building. Vey atmospheric. Very family friendly. We travel from N London to come here.
