About This Pub

Ah, Ye Olde Monken Holt – it's one of those pubs that really captures the heart of a classic British high street spot. I have to say, the beers are a highlight; that Timothy Taylor’s Landlord is just sublime, and it's clear the team puts effort into keeping things top quality. The staff are genuinely lovely, always up for a chat, and the atmosphere feels like a proper old-school haven where you can relax with mates. They've got live music now and then, which is a nice surprise and adds a bit of energy without it getting too rowdy. But, on the flip side, I've come across some troubling stories in the reviews about how not everyone is made to feel welcome, which is a real shame and something that sticks in your mind. It's got a solid overall rating, mind you, but those recent mixed experiences suggest it might not be perfect every time. If you're in Barnet and fancy a pint, it's worth popping in for the good bits, but I'd say go with your eyes open and hope for the best – after all, a great pub should be for everyone.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The ales are absolutely spot on – especially that Timothy Taylor’s Landlord, which is a proper treat for any beer lover.
  • The staff are really friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
  • It has a lovely traditional pub atmosphere, like a step back in time, with nice touches that make it feel cosy and authentic.
  • They sometimes have live music, which adds a fun and lively buzz to the place without overwhelming the space.
Cons
  • There have been some serious concerns raised in reviews about unfair treatment and discrimination, which is really disappointing and could make some feel uneasy.
  • Recent feedback shows a bit of inconsistency, with some experiences falling flat compared to the overall rating.
  • The online presence is pretty minimal, just an Instagram link, so it's not the easiest to get more info before heading over.

A fantastic pub situated on the high street of Barnet. Katie and her team do an amazing job, particularly with the ales. A 5-star pint of Timothy Taylor’s Landlord! Thanks Katie.

Lovely convivial pub at the far end of Barnet high street. A reminder of how pubs used to be. The staff were really nice and friendly.

You see fake reviews on every establishment and Iv seen a few on this pub over the last couple of months from people, regarding being refusing entry and/or served due to being Irish travellers. Today Iv seen a video of a 72 year old women coming into the pub and being refused a drink. No reason given only the man pointing to a sign saying no filing and we have the right to refuse to serve anyone. What could possibly be the reason for refusing a 72 year old women a drink in an empty pub? Sean and Katie how do you explain this? I'm Irish myself, my dad is a traveller and my mum is English, Iv been in the pub on plenty of occasions and so have my family it's just vile racist behaviour. All of your customers well most of them are Irish and I wonder what they would think doing that to an elderly lady all because she is a traveller. You should be ashamed of yourselves, I will be sharing the video to all of the local Barnet, Hadley wood etc groups so people can see what you have done. If the shoe was on the other foot and it was any other ethnic minority or race there would be an uproar. Never again will I or my family step in the pub or recommend it to anyone.

I was Absolutely horrified I could not believe I was sitting and witnessing modern Day racism in 2025 would highly recommend nobody visit this establishment and to the landlord and the staff and some of the customers you should hang Your head and shame I was present when you refuse service of two old ladies and the way you refuse and spoke to them was absolutely unnecessary. This was blatant discrimination at its finest.

Been going to this pub on and off for the last 20 years, not regularly since the 90s - when it used to be a solid traditional old man pub, definitely dipped through the years but now really good. Live music at times - can be a trifle loud for a small pub, but lots of nice touches these days. Very cosy
