About This Pub
Ah, The Old Cherry Tree – what a gem of a pub it is, tucked away in the historic village of Great Houghton. I have to say, stepping inside feels like a step back in time with its stone walls and thatched roof; it's just the sort of place you'd fancy for a quiet pint or a lazy afternoon chat. The beers are a real highlight – they've got some brilliant options like that Adnams Southwold Bitter, which packs a lovely hoppy punch and uses local malts, making it a treat for anyone who appreciates a good ale. And it's family-oriented too, with a welcoming feel that makes it easy to pop in for a meal with the little ones. On the food front, when it's good, it's genuinely good; I've heard praises for the well-presented dishes using fresh, local ingredients, and the Thai choices add a nice twist if you're in the mood for something beyond the usual pub fare. But, and I say this as a mate would, it's not all roses – some visits have left people disappointed with overcooked roasts or greasy chips, and the portions can feel a bit stingy for the price tag, especially on Sundays when you're expecting that hearty lunch. Service has its off days as well, with a few grumbles about it being slow or not quite attentive enough. Overall, I'd recommend giving it a go if you're in the area; it's got that classic pub charm in spades, but just keep your expectations in check for the food to avoid any letdowns. It's all about balance, isn't it?
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is absolutely charming – it's a proper old English pub with a thatched roof and a cosy hearth, perfect for a relaxing pint or a catch-up with mates.
-
They've got a cracking selection of beers, like the Adnams Southwold Bitter, which is full of flavour and brewed with local ingredients – real ale enthusiasts will love it.
-
It's family-friendly, with a warm welcome and options for kids, making it a great spot for a Sunday outing.
-
When the food hits the mark, it's spot on; think well-presented dishes using local produce, and they've even got Thai options for something a bit different.
Cons
-
Food quality can be inconsistent – some dishes come out overcooked or greasy, like tough roast beef or mushy potatoes, which is a shame for a place that prides itself on good grub.
-
Prices feel a bit steep for what you get, with complaints about small portions and extras like gravy costing extra, especially for Sunday lunch.
-
Service isn't always up to scratch; a few folks have mentioned it being slow or lacking that extra effort, which can put a dampener on the experience.
-
The menu's not massive, so if you're after a wide variety, you might find it a tad limited, and it's not always the best value compared to other local spots.

Visited for MIL's birthday. I've not been here for years, used to be a regular lunch stop. The latest management seems to be doing a good job. Not a huge menu, but the food that we had was well presented and delicious.
Nice pub. But really overpriced for Sunday lunch and service was really poor. Went for a group Sunday lunch today, the portion size relative to cost is far off the mark. Paying £1 for a little bit more gravy also seems bizarre, when it goes hand in hand with £7+ pint costs and over £10 for starter and desserts which are a real mix in portion size and quality.
£26 for a trio roast which has 1 small slice of each meat well done is really stindgy.
I had a chocolate brownie Sunday dessert. At £10 for 2 scoops of shop bought ice-cream with some off the shelf chocolate sauce it's unclear what I am paying for. There were 2 tiny bits of brownie at the bottom barely noticeable.
I think when you end up paying £70 for a couple to have a roast and dessert each with 2 drinks and you aren't impressed something is very wrong. Won't be going again.
Had Sunday lunch there. The food was overpriced and awful. Roast sirloin was over cooked and worse than shoe leather. The Yorkshire pudding was overcooked. The roast potatoes were mushy and the veg was terrible. The fish and chips were inedible and soaked in grease. The chips came in a stack that looked nice, but were glued together. Two stars because the service was good. We won’t be going back.
There are a few really good Sunday lunch spots in the area, this one is OK. The pub itself is lovely, a proper old English pub. Good beer selection too. The reason we were there was to try the Sunday lunch, and it was OK. But I wouldn't go back just for that, there are better options. Didn't help that all we could hear throughout lunch was the poor cook coughing and hacking in the kitchen. Lovely little spot though and will be back for one of their themed events, perhaps the Thai Night.
Great cosy village pub with hearth to warm up by. Busy today being Xmas Day, but much needed stop mid way through an Xmas stroll.
Current menu shown using local produce. Looks great. They do serve Thai food as well my favourite.
Didn't eat as Xmas dinner to savour later.
