About This Pub
Oh, you know, when I think about The Motte & Bailey, it just brings a smile – it's one of those pubs where you walk in and instantly feel at ease. The food's a standout; they've got these fresh, homemade dishes using local suppliers, like generous Sunday roasts that folks rave about, and it's all served up with a side of brilliant service from the team, who are always cheerful and attentive. The garden's a proper delight on a sunny day, with plenty of spots to settle in, and it's spot-on for families or if you're out with the dog, plus they're open all day every day, which is handy for a spontaneous stop. They've even got events like Psychic Suppers that add a fun twist. But, to be fair, it's tucked away in a rural bit of Hitchin, so it might take a bit of effort to get to if you're not local, and the opening times aren't always crystal clear, which could catch you out. Still, with that solid 4.3 rating, it's clear most people leave chuffed, and I'd say it's well worth a visit for a proper pub experience – just pop in and see for yourself!

Great food (three different mains on a table of 4 people) and very good service.
Good value for money.
Will definitely return!
Great pub with good selection of drinks, excellent food and welcoming staff! Roast dinner is amazing - the best in area!
We live in the village so are a little biased but love this country pub. Excellent Sunday roast and pretty sunny garden with lots of different areas. Staff always friendly and dogs welcome. Lovely roaring fire in the winter and Jo has thought of everything from a dog watering station, blankets for outside and beautiful window artwork.
Fantastic meal. Jo and her team we're excellent, friendly and very welcoming. Fantastic food, excellent pub and brilliant atmosphere. We will definitely be returning!
Lovely pub, very nice staff, great food. We've been looking for our local Sunday roast spot since moving to Hitchin a few years ago and now we've found it! Portion size was very generous and even came with a surprise free cauliflower cheese!
So happy to have found this place, will definitely be coming back.
