About This Pub

Ah, The Morning Star – it's one of those places that just warms your heart from the moment you step in, with its family-run ethos and that genuine Belfast spirit shining through since 1810. I've heard from loads of folks how the food steals the show; their roast beef dinners and steaks are proper winners, all thanks to top-notch local sourcing and sustainable farming practices that make you feel like you're doing something good while tucking in. The awards they've racked up, like being named the best gastro pub in Antrim, really back that up, and it's no surprise to see so many happy comments about the value and the lively atmosphere in the lounge. It's ideal for a Sunday lunch or a special occasion, where the flavours and the buzz make for a memorable time. But, let's be straight, it's not all rosy – there have been a few grumbles about service being a bit sluggish at times, like when the team gets distracted and leaves you waiting for drinks, which could put a slight dampener on things if you're after prompt attention. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for anyone looking for quality grub in a welcoming setting, and I'd say it's worth a visit if you're in the area, just maybe plan for a relaxed outing.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely top-notch, with standout dishes like their roast beef and steaks that folks can't stop raving about – it's fresh, locally sourced, and full of flavour.
  • It's got a warm, buzzing atmosphere in the lounge, perfect for a relaxed meal or a catch-up with mates, and that historic Belfast vibe really adds to the charm.
  • They champion sustainable farming and local produce, which is brilliant to see, making you feel good about what you're eating while supporting the community.
  • Great value for money, especially with their award-winning status – it's a hidden gem that delivers on quality without breaking the bank.
  • The place has a lovely family-owned feel, with a rich history dating back to 1810, making every visit feel welcoming and authentic.
Cons
  • Service can sometimes fall short, like when staff get caught up chatting and drinks orders take a while, which might leave you a bit frustrated if you're in a hurry.
  • It might not suit everyone if you're after a quick pint, as the focus leans more towards the restaurant side, and things can get a tad slow on busier days.

Beef Sunday roast was lovely but we were so disappointed with the service. They could of made so much more money if they actually wanted to take our drinks order and get it to us in a timely manner. There was barely anyone else in the downstairs area but the staff were so busy talking to each other and resetting tables for tomorrow they basically ignored us. Had to ask them to even clear glasses so we could fit our dinners on the table. We booked for 6pm on a Sunday and the sunday menu is lovely just don't expect good service.

Recommended to us by locals for its quality beef offering and value. We were impressed by the number of awards received too. Our meals were delicious. The sharing t-bone platter was a delight, thoroughly enjoyable. Children's size joint of the day is a winner too.

The Roast beef dinner is the best thing we have ever eaten! Well worth the money and more. Highly recommend the food! 🌟🌟🌟🌟 We had the sharing board for starters- was really nice & chicken and potatoes were just incredible! Partner had the steak & chips and onion rings and I had the roast beef dinner & it was literally the best meal I have ever eaten! Definitely will be coming back for more next time we are here on holiday 🫶🏼

We had the carvery here for lunch and it was absolutely delicious, everything was cooked beautifully and it was the perfect comfort food on a cold day, highly recommend and for 8£ it’s impossible to beat. I had a beautiful white wine with that as well and the Guinness was also delicious 😋 would return anytime I am in Belfast.

Always knew of the Morning start and always thought of it as a wee pub down joys entry!! Hubby decided to eat here for my birthday and honestly it is a hidden gem!! The food was absolutely outstanding, the shared starter was amazing it was a meal in itself, the flavours, the staff, the atmosphere was just perfect and very welcoming. The bar man even brought 2 different bottles of wine over for us to try before we decided. Nothing was too much bother. Will definitely be back.
