About This Pub

Ah, The Mill at Charnock Farm – it's one of those places that really grows on you, tucked away in the heart of Lancashire with its beautiful barn conversion and that quintessentially British pub feel. I have to say, the standout bits are the charming atmosphere and those gorgeous views over the lake; it's just the ticket for unwinding with friends over a well-poured ale or a spot of afternoon tea with scrumptious cakes and scones. The drink selection is spot on too, offering everything from traditional cask ales to a cracking range of gins and wines, and most folks seem chuffed with the friendly service that keeps things ticking along nicely. On the flip side, though, it's not all smooth sailing – a few have mentioned lengthy waits for food, and it can come out in dribs and drabs, which might put a damper on things if you're dining with a group. Still, with an overall solid rating and plenty of positive vibes from recent visits, I'd say it's well worth a go for a relaxed day out, especially if you fancy exploring the onsite café or petting zoo afterwards. All in all, it's a balanced choice for us pub enthusiasts, with the good bits shining through if you manage your expectations.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely charming, with stunning views over the lake and a cosy rustic vibe that makes it perfect for a relaxed catch-up.
  • They've got a brilliant selection of drinks, including cask ales, European lagers, and a fine range of gins and wines to suit all tastes.
  • Service is generally warm and efficient, especially for drinks and café items like those delicious cakes, scones, and teas that hit the spot.
  • It's part of a larger farm setup with extras like a café, glamping pods, and even a petting zoo, making it ideal for a full day out in the Lancashire countryside.
Cons
  • There can be long waits for food at times, which might leave you a bit frustrated if you're hoping for a quick meal.
  • Food service isn't always consistent, with dishes sometimes arriving at different times for the group, making it feel a tad disorganised.

Popped in while we were walking in the area. Excellent pot of tea for two and a good choice of cakes, scones and shortbread. Very popular, but there were plenty of seats available. Service was also good.

Lovely meal. Service with a smile and them chunky chips are to die for. Incredible! All food was hot and delicious and served timely! Lovely ambience here and nice place to relax and then go for a walk and feed the ducks and fish.

Had a lovely stay in the pods last night, visited the bar for some drinks and had breakfast at the cafe. The pods were lovely and warm and what a lovely view to wake up to. Would definitely recommend.

Very long wait for food unfortunately and even then the food came out in dribs and drabs. Some members of the group had finished before others (including the children) received their meals. Side plates came out almost as a dessert when everything else was finished. We were told there would be a 30 minute wait, but it was 60 minutes and then another 10 to 20 minutes before everything was on the table. The food was decent enough though when it did arrive. The Mill is a pleasant setting, although it is cold as it is a converted mill / barn. It is dog friendly and the surrounding farm with animals is lovely as well. The Mill also sells animal food to feed the ducks and fish. It was just a shame the food wasn't served in a timely fashion especially considering it was far from busy at the time.

Met a friend here for coffee. I last visited many years ago and since then it has expanded considerably. Situated within the grounds of Charnock Farm, Leyland this cafe has both indoor and outdoor seating. It overlooks a large pond with free roaming ducks and geese. There are a couple of pens housing various birds and hens. There is also a barn with 3 Shetland ponies and a donkey. They have access to the outdoors too. On site there is a pub, a motel and several glamping pods positioned around a second pond. In addition there are several small independent businesses, ranging from gift shops, wedding accessories, massage and therapy service, to also a place called Valley Mist, focusing on sustainable, reusable/refillable and vegan made products. Charnock Farm itself is a beautifully converted barn, holding events such as celebrations, weddings and wakes. With its own entrance and bar, this place is worthy of a visit and consideration. (Photos attached are of Valley Mist).
