About This Pub

Oh, let me tell you about The Malt Shovel – it's one of those gems tucked away in a charming village near Harrogate, where you can really unwind with a pint of cask ale or a glass of wine. From what I've gathered from the reviews, the food is a standout; folks rave about the fantastic dishes and how the team has fine-tuned things to make every bite memorable, whether it's for a special occasion or just a casual bite. The atmosphere is spot on too, with its rustic charm, open fires, and a beer garden that's perfect for soaking up the countryside vibes after a lovely walk around the estate – and it's great that they welcome dogs along for the adventure. But, to keep it real, there was that one review mentioning a rather unpleasant experience with staff being rude and messing up orders, which is a shame because it seems like it's not the norm, but it's something to bear in mind if you're planning a visit. Overall, with a solid 4.7 rating, it's got that winning combination of good grub, friendly vibes, and a scenic location that makes it well worth a trip, as long as you book ahead to secure your spot.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food here is absolutely top-notch – think exquisite dishes that really hit the spot, with tweaks to classics like belly pork that take them to the next level.
  • It's got that warm, friendly atmosphere with open fires and quirky rooms, making it a cosy spot for a relaxed evening out.
  • Being dog-friendly is a real bonus, so you can pop in with your four-legged mate without any fuss.
  • The setting is just beautiful, nestled in a picturesque village with stunning walks nearby, followed by a refreshing pint in the beer garden.
  • Service is generally spot-on, with welcoming staff who go the extra mile, like surprising you with a special touch for an anniversary.
Cons
  • There have been a few reports of inconsistent service, like getting the wrong order or dealing with a rude member of staff, which can put a dampener on things.
  • The operating hours look a bit muddled from what's listed, so it's worth checking in advance to avoid any disappointment if it's unexpectedly quiet.

It's our 20th wedding anniversary and very last minute we decided to eat out so called this morning and booked. Always wanted to try The Malt Shovel, Brearton it did not dissapoint. We had a lovely corner table reserved and then I spotted the balloon, I thought it was just a coincidence 🤣 but the waitress said no that's for you as you mentioned it was your anniversary! What a lovely touch. I had apple and parsnip soup for starter, it was so thick, tasty and piping hot. My husband had prawns and the portion was good, he really enjoyed them We both couldn't resist the homemade steak and ale pie, the meat just melted in your mouth. Would of loved dessert but was so full! We both had starter and main with an alcoholic drink each. Total was £70, for the portions and how delicious the food was we thought that was good value. Lovely cosy country pub and Rosie serving us was absolutely fantastic. Looking forward to going back

I have dined several times at The Malt Shovel and recently had the most horrendous experience. The manager/owner, who is a petite lady, wears black and ties her hair up was extremely rude. Both my partner and I received the wrong desserts. I politely explained that it wasn't what we ordered. Rather than being pleasant and correcting their mistake, the woman started arguing with me, talking over the top of me in a manner that was beyond belief!!! The whole incident was extremely upsetting. I eat out most Saturdays, and this was the first time I had ever encountered such rudeness from anyone, especially when they got the order wrong. The whole experience was horrific. I had previously told my friends how wonderful the food was. They now know not to go to The Malt Shovel!!! Well, I have just read the reply, and to my disgust, I can honestly say that is a pack of lies. This just shows me how little respect they have for the customer. It's totally unbelievable. Most restaurant owners listen to the customer and quietly without trying to cause an argument correct their mistake with a smile. All someone wants is to be treated in a friendly way. Certainly, not in a hostile way. You go to a restaurant for food and atmosphere. You should leave feeling happy. The reply to my original comment is totally false. Extremely disappointed!!!!

Visited yesterday (we visit regularly) and the food and service is top drawer but yesterday was off the scale good. James had done some tweaks to the already amazing belly pork and these tweaks took it to the next level not that the previous version needed it. The service from Laura is always second to none and they genuinely cannot do enough for you. I eat at some of the finest restaurants in the world so please take it from me if you visit The Malt Shovel Brearton you WILL NOT be disappointed. Keep up the great work guys💯👍🏻👌😋😋

We booked at the Malt Shovel as we were staying in the area for a weekend away. It was a lovely meal and served by very welcoming staff. A good menu choice and well-timed service complimented by pleasant live piano music. Will certainly go back when in the area again.
