About This Pub

Ah, The Malt Shovel – it's one of those pubs that just makes you feel right at home from the moment you walk in. I've got to say, the beers are fantastic; whether you're into ales or ciders, they've got a solid selection that's always well-kept, and it's clear from the reviews that folks really appreciate that. The atmosphere is spot on too – super welcoming, with staff who go out of their way to make you feel part of the gang, and it's great that it's open to kids and dogs, adding to that community feel. Plus, the decor's nicely done with a modern twist, and the beer garden is a lovely spot for when the weather's on your side. On the flip side, it's a shame there's no website or much online buzz, which might make it harder for newcomers to get the lowdown or check for any changes. And while most reviews are glowing, that one four-star mention suggests things aren't perfect every time, so it might pay to go in with realistic expectations. All in all, if you're after a down-to-earth spot for a chat and a drink, it's well worth a visit – I'd definitely pop in again soon.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is absolutely spot on – plenty of great ales and ciders that hit the mark every time.
  • It's got such a warm and welcoming atmosphere; everyone seems super friendly, making it feel like a proper community hub.
  • Child and dog friendly, which is brilliant for families or if you're out with your furry mate.
  • The decor is tastefully done with a modern touch, and there's a lovely beer garden that's perfect for a summer evening.
Cons
  • It doesn't have an official website or much of an online presence, so it might be a bit tricky to find out more before you visit.
  • With the business not being claimed by the owners, things like updates or specials might not be as reliable or up-to-date as you'd hope.
  • Based on the reviews, it seems mostly positive, but that one slightly lower rating hints at room for a bit more consistency in the overall experience.

A recently refurbished pub newly mentioned in Camra Good Beer Guide. Its tastefully decorated in a fairly modern style. The tables are custom made in light wood and the rectangular ones have pipework as the legs. All the beer I tried was spot on. There is a beer garden which is illuminated at night. It is well lit which may disturb some who like darker pubs but I liked it and it fitted well with the style. A hidden gem in Dudley!
