About This Pub

You know, chatting about The Lodge Bar feels like sharing tips with mates over a pint – it's this family-run spot in Hoole that's just ace for a laid-back evening. I love how it's so handy, only a quick stroll from the city centre, making it ideal for grabbing a bite or a drink after a day out. The menu's a real winner with its locally sourced grub and a solid range of beers that cater to all tastes, and the prices won't break the bank. The vibe is warm and inviting, whether you're settling in for a meal indoors or enjoying the outdoor area on a sunny day. On the downside, I've heard the service can be a bit hit or miss – nothing disastrous, but it might not always be as speedy or attentive as you'd like, though folks say it's improving. Plus, if you're not a regular, you might sense that some spots are unofficially claimed, which could put a slight dampener on things. All in all, it's a solid choice for a good night out, with plenty of charm to outweigh the minor niggles, so I'd definitely recommend giving it a go if you're in Chester.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are friendly and helpful, always ready for a chat and making you feel welcome right away.
  • They've got a cracking selection of beers and wines, including local brews that really hit the spot.
  • The food is spot on, with a menu full of seasonal specials using top-notch, locally sourced ingredients at sensible prices.
  • It's in a brilliant location, just a short walk from Chester city centre and the railway station, perfect for a quick stop after exploring.
  • The atmosphere is lovely and relaxed, with cosy spots inside and outdoor seating for when the weather's playing nice.
Cons
  • Service has been a bit lacklustre in the past, though it seems to be on the up these days, so it might not be as smooth as you'd hope.
  • Some tables inside can feel like they're reserved for the regulars, which might make it a tad intimidating if you're popping in for the first time.
  • There haven't been many recent reviews, so it's hard to tell if everything's as fresh as it could be – things might have changed since the last buzz.

Nice place for a drink. Has always had very mediocre service, but seems to be improving

Helpful, friendly bar staff kept our drinks coming as we sat outside under a large cover. Heaters available if it got too cold. Good range of beers and wines - I was drinking Cheshire Cat or Oracle - and friendly atmosphere.

Can’t compliment them enough. The food is excellent and the variety is eclectic, from mussels to Chilli. Great pub food at sensible prices and the beer is also priced sensibly. You can sit outside or in but the tables inside do seem to be reserved by regulars which might be a bit off putting when you walk in as you can see a sea of reserved signs! Staff are great and helpful too the sharing platter for starters was excellent. Haven’t tried the desserts but they looked good. Ant understand why people would chose anywhere else in Hoole for lunch

The Lodge is a very nice bar that serves food a very standard. Their main beer comes from the Salopain brewery but also have a number of other lagers and bitters. The bar is split into a number of smaller rooms with different types of furniture. On thing that is very popular at the lodge is the outside seating area that has large umbrellas and heaters
